Our Weekly News Jan. 23-27

 Dear Families,

It was a great week in Kindergarten! We started off our week with a SNOW DAY! Here are a few pictures of our winter themed centers.

At the HOT COCOA center, we took a colored mug and spilled the marshmallows that were inside.  We then had to use the letters on the marshmallows to spell a sight word.  We also had to record our work.

At the SNOWBALL center, we needed to find a snowball that had the correct beginning sound for our CVC words.

At the GONE FISHING center, we caught a fish, recorded and solved an addition equation!

At the TUNDRA LANES center, we worked together to set up 10 trees.  We then took turns bowling and recording how many trees we knocked down. What a fun way to explore subtraction!

We had SNOW much fun!!
ELA

This week our main story was Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner. While listening to the story, students were working on visualizing, inferring, and stating their opinion.  We also worked on retelling the story by remembering key details in the text.  Be sure to ask your child to retell the story to you at home!

Here are our 2 highlighted vocabulary words.  Can your child tell you what they mean or use them in a sentence???
Our phonics focus was the -sh and -ch digraphs.  We learned that a digraph is 2 letters that work together to make one sound.  We practiced making, reading and writing words that begin and end with -sh and -ch.  We could practice this at home, too.  Try asking us to write fish, cash, shed, ship, chop, chat, rich and such!
Begins with sh like shed  &  Ends with sh like wash

Begins with ch like chips  &  Ends with ch like inch

Sticking with the snowman theme - our new poem this week was My New Friend! The kids loved the actions for this poem - be sure to ask us to sing it for you at home!
Our 2 new sight words were said and that.  Be sure to ask your child where the hat, scarf and mittens were hiding in our game below.
Writing
This week we finished up our How To writing.  We had fun writing our own "How To" stories.  We came up with so many different topics to write about...how to build a snowman, how to ride a horse, how to get dressed, how to make breakfast, how to make cookies, how to build a robot...be sure to ask your child what topic he/she wrote about! We are excited to start our Informational Non-Fiction writing next week!

Math
In math we focused on sorting 2D shapes in a variety of ways.  We sorted by shape, color, size, straight lines and curved lines, and corners and no corners.  After we sorted the shape cards, we then compared the numbers in each group using our vocabulary words of greater than, less than and equal to.
