BRING on SPRING!! We are ALL ready to ditch our snow boots and coats for spring jackets!!

This week during skills, we focused on double-letter spellings for consonant sounds.   We read words with the double-letter spellings: ff ll dd ss tt zz nn pp rr  mm  and ck.  We also practiced writing words with these letter teams. Be sure to ask us to practice this at home for you - we can read and write words like chill, sick, kiss, egg, stuff, off, mitt, and buzz - we can do it! We also reviewed all of our tricky words. Check out our Tic tac toe game - be sure to ask your child to read and write all of the words for you!

It was Dinosaur Week in Kindergarten! The kids loved sharing what they know about dinosaurs and adding many new dinosaur facts to their schema.  We did a great job of writing our dinosaur facts, too!

                                                                            

Our poem this week followed our Dinosaur theme...be sure to ask us to sing it for you!!

In Math this week, our students decomposed the numbers 6, 7 and 8!  Decomposing a number means to  take a whole number and break it into two parts.  This skill is incredibly important for addition and subtraction. If students know how to break apart numbers, then they will be able to think flexibly with numbers.

A Note from the Principal Dear Thorson Families, It is carnival week at Thorson! We are looking forward to the big event on Saturday. The carnival will be from 11:00-3:00 this Saturday, March 16 at Thorson. We hope to see many of you at this fun, family friendly event! NEW this year, the carnival silent auction is online - no need to be present to win! Click here to see the wonderful items up for bid as well as the highly anticipated Teacher Experiences! Bidding is open Friday at 4pm through Saturday at 4pm.  In other PTO news, there are several PTO board positions available for next year. These include president, vice president, and secretary. Nominations will be accepted through the end of April and officers will be elected at the May PTO meeting. All positions can be done with another person, so grab a friend and join us in one of these open positions.  We are excited to announce that Ms. Kestell is bringing back Family Wellness Night! This free family event provides various activities for students and families around the theme of wellness. The event will be held on Friday, April 12. Mark your calendars and stay tuned for more information! Looking ahead to next week, we have a few dress up themes. On Monday, we invite students and staff to wear green to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. On Thursday, we invite students and staff to wear crazy socks in observance of Down Syndrome Awareness Day. Sign up here-volunteer. Girls Running Club It's back! Ms Kestell, Mrs. Kowalkowski, and Mrs. McGlone are bringing back the Girls Running Club! Regardless of experience, we are encouraging all interested girls in grades 3-5 to join us for a fun-filled year of GIRLS RUNNING CLUB!  If this sounds like something that would be of interest to your student  please find more information here and fill out the permission form by Friday, April 5. Students can arrive at 5:45 PM with their instruments, music, and portable music stands. For concert attire, students are encouraged to dress up. We want to look good and sound good! The concert should last between 20 to 30 minutes total. We look forward to seeing you at our first concert! Each paid admission is eligible to win prizes. Children 3 years old and younger get in for free but are not eligible for prizes.Wrist bands cost $15 per child with a family max cost of $45. Parents who volunteer at the Carnival will receive a discount of $12/child or max of $40 for the whole family! Weekly Newsletter- March 11-15th

Wow! What a busy week we had! We tapped a maple tree and learned all about making maple syrup. The Cedarburg Lions club also checked our eyes. We visited the library and had a lesson about Dr. Seuss. What a big week!  

Skills: In skills this week, we read a new story about our friend Sam, The Van. In this story, we noticed new punctuation marks, including exclamation points. When we see exclamation points, we have to read them with excitement!  Students learned new tricky words "was" and "from" Continue to have your kindergartner practice our tricky words!  Students should continue to work on reading the decodable readers that have been sent home.  We can tell when the students practice!

Knowledge: This week's story was Monster Trouble. While reading it, we practiced the skills of predicting, retelling, making connections, and answering questions.  Students had the opportunity to learn the new vocabulary words of burst, discovered, and doze.  We also learned about the important skill of perseverance—the character trait of not giving up and trying even when things get hard. Ask your kindergartner how Winifred and the monsters showed perseverance in the story.

Math: This week, we played some new games during math! We built addition equations, counted with dimes and pennies, and worked on decomposing numbers! Be sure to ask your child which game was their favorite - Roll, Add and Compare, A Dime and Some Pennies, or Shake Those Beans          

This weekend is the Carnival!  Come to school and have LOTS of fun!  There are lots of games and prizes to be won!  

Wear GREEN on Monday, March 18th, to celebrate St. Patrick's Day!

Thorson Weekly Notes March 7, 2024 Wear Thorson Spiritwear!  Follow us on Facebook! A Note from the Principal Dear Thorson Families, Our March character traits are courage and perseverance. We will have our all-school Jaguar Jumpstart in the gym tomorrow morning where we will continue our work with these concepts. We begin promptly at 8:50 a.m., so please make sure that your child is here on time tomorrow morning. Don’t forget to have your child wear their Thorson spiritwear or school colors! We will be beginning class placement work for the 2024-25 school year soon.  Please read this important letter regarding class placement and parent feedback. If you would like to provide feedback regarding the classroom environment that best suits your child, please follow the instructions in the letter and provide this by Tuesday, April 2. Please remember that specific teacher requests cannot be honored. Our next PTO meeting is Monday, March 11 at 7:00 p.m. We will meet in the Thorson Community Room. Please enter at Door 14. We invite all to join us! Also, don’t forget that our PTO Winter Carnival is coming up next weekend and will be held on Saturday, March 16. The Carnival Chairs and Committee have been hard at work and are excited to provide a fun, family event for our school community. As was communicated in an email earlier this week, we will be having a special school-wide celebration that will utilize the cafeteria space on Friday, March 22. English Language Arts Update At the Curriculum Committee of the Board meeting, a recommendation to implement Amplify CKLA as the District's new elementary curriculum for 2024-25 was proposed.  The resources are now under closer review by committee members with potential School Board action in March.  These resources are also available for parent/guardian review if you'd like to see them more closely.  Alan Groth, the Director of Curriculum and Instruction is overseeing this process and his assistant, Jane Lopata is available for you to schedule a time to visit the District Office to look at the curriculum and can be reached at:  Jane Lopata @ 262-376-6111 OR jlopata@cedarburg.k12.wi.us. Thorson Green Squad The Thorson Green Squad is looking for volunteers to help collect our maple sap from our school forest.
