Wear Orange and Black

A Note from the Principal
Dear Thorson Families,

Happy Homecoming Week! In honor of CHS homecoming, we will be having Bulldog Day at Thorson tomorrow. Students and staff are encouraged to wear orange and black or Bulldog gear to school on Friday! We also invite all to attend the homecoming parade at 5:00 p.m. tomorrow and the football game at 7:00 p.m.

We are also celebrating National Custodian Day tomorrow. We are so thankful for all of the hard work that  Mr. Tim and his crew do to keep our school clean and safe. Their hard work and dedication make Thorson an awesome place to be. Thank you Mr. Tim and Thorson’s cleaning crew!

If your child is late to school, or if you are picking up your child early from school for an appointment or other reason, please remember that you must come into the school office to sign your child in or out. There is a chromebook kiosk on the counter in the office for this purpose. We will not be able to release your child until you have signed them out via this kiosk. Thank you for your cooperation.

Do you know anyone who loves children and would be interested in substitute teaching?  As you may have seen in the news, it is a challenge to secure school staff these days.  We are so fortunate to be fully staffed at Thorson, but are always looking for amazing individuals willing and able to be substitutes in the chance that a teacher or support staff member is out ill.  Please contact me if you are interested and I can share a little bit more about the application process and duties.  Thank you so much!

Looking ahead, we have no school next Friday, October 7, as this is a scheduled professional development day for staff. Thank you for supporting the continued learning of our teachers on these days.

Have a great weekend, and Go Bulldogs!

Sincerely,

Angela Little, Principal
Scott May, Assistant Principal

Homecoming Week is September 26-October 1 at Cedarburg High School!
During next week's JV and V athletic games, CHS Athletics will have bins outside Groth Family Stadium at Alumni Field to collect food donations for Ozaukee Family Sharing.
Bins will be located outside the gates on Thursday and Friday. Any donations of non-perishable items are greatly appreciated!
The event raises much-needed funds for Family Sharing's food pantry while raising awareness of the growing need in Ozaukee County.
Let's GO Bulldogs!

Social Studies Update

A team of teachers at our school are conducting a short-term trial of a new Social Studies resource called:  TCI.  Last year, a District team considered a few resources that they felt could meet Cedarburg Social Studies Standards, and based upon some preliminary review believed the TCI should be explored more closely along with Native People of Wisconsin.  Additionally grade 4 teachers will be exploring Wisconsin, Our State, Our Story.  Thus, at our school the following teachers will be using this resource for September and October and will be implementing one unit of study.  Here's ________(school name) Trial Team (select just your team from below):

Westlawn:  Melissa Fry, Angie Sheppard, Ann Ingham, Meghan Reilly and Charlotte Butzler
Parkview:  Ashley Miller, Jennifer French, Ben Gauger, and Steve Keller
Thorson:  Erin Staffaroni, Molly Houben, Jack Brooks

Webster:  Mike Johnson, Andrew Mindham, Kyle Peterson

We are excited at the prospects of updating our Social Studies curriculum.  More information to follow as the District Trial Team continues its research in this important area of the curriculum.

Weekly Newsletter September 26-September 29

September 29, 2022,

Dear Families,
Happy Birthday Johnny Appleseed! What a fun way to start off our week! Here are a few pictures from our Apple Day! Thank you to ALL of the families that sent in supplies to make our day extra special!
We learned about Johnny Appleseed and then followed step by step directions to draw him!

We colored and read a Johnny Appleseed book! We hope you enjoyed hearing it at home, too!

YUM!! Apples and caramel, applesauce and apple juice! What a treat!!

Check out our cute apple project!

ELA
This week our read aloud was Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. We worked on the reading strategies of predicting, naming the characters and setting, sequencing the story, comparing and contrasting Chrysanthemum and Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse, inferring and stating our opinions.  Be sure to ask your child if he/she thinks it was OK to make fun of Chrysanthemum's name.
Be sure to ask us what our 2 vocabulary words mean!
We did a great job of predicting what will happen in the story!
Our new sight words were /the/ and /we/.  We played a game each day to try and find Johnny Appleseed's apples.  Ask your child to read the words below and tell you where the apples were hiding!
In phonics, we worked on the letters /c/ /f/ /d/ and /g/.  We practiced writing the letters, learning the sounds and hand motions that go along with each letter, and finding words that begin with each letter, too.  Please review these letter sounds with your child at home!

We love our Apples poem from this week! We would love to sing it for you at home!
Writing
In writers workshop, we are working on writing pattern books.  We are trying to stretch out our words to hear each sound.  This can be really tricky!  A little practice from home would be super helpful. Writing apple - apl is exactly how it sounds! We are also learning to use spaces between our words and end our sentences with punctuation, too. We can do it!!
Math
In math we have been learning how to play some fun Work Place games! We also took our i-Ready math assessment.  Mrs. Neuville and Mrs. Rocky were so proud of us - it was tricky at first - but we did not give up! We kept working and doing our best! We are excited to begin the i-Ready personalized lessons and games!
*Your child will be bringing home a book bag today! We are working on figuring out the correct levels for each child. There are instructions in the bag.  If the book is too easy - it's OK. It's a great way to build confidence and practice those beginning sight words.  If the book is too hard - be sure to read the words for your child and have him/her repeat the word and point with their pointer pup. Thank you!
*Tomorrow is BULLDOG DAY at Thorson - be sure to wear black and/or orange to show your support for our Cedarburg Bulldogs! It is their Homecoming!!
*Please remember to send 2 snacks daily - NO HANGRY KIDS in kindergarten:)
*With colder mornings- please label all jackets, sweatshirts, etc

Have a great weekend!

Weekly Newsletter- September 19-22nd

September 22, 2022

Dear Families,
It's been a ROCKIN' good time in Kindergarten!! We started our week with fun, engaging, academic Pete the Cat centers!  As you can see in the pictures below - a great time was had by all!  We hope your children told you ALL about our day!
Our teachers dressed like Pete the cat! They are ready to have some fun!

One center was the Ducky Shapes center.  Each duck had a special shape attached to the bottom.  We worked hard on identifying our 2D shapes!

Our last center was the Magic Sunglasses center.  We had to wear our magic sunglasses to find a hidden number on our cards.  We then had to find the matching 10 frame and write the number.

We loved making our own Pete the Cats to decorate our hallways!

Here is what our sight word game looked like this week.  Our 2 new words were : and and like. Please practice these words with your child every night!

Math
In math this week we worked on decomposing the number 5 into pairs.  Ask us to show you how we decompose this five frame.

Your child should hold up 2 fingers on one hand (dots) and 3 fingers on the other (empty boxes).

Tomorrow is an early release day!  Thank you families for making arrangements to pick up your child early.  Teachers and staff will be in meetings.

Tomorrow students should wear Thorson gear or the color blue!

Love,
Mrs. Neuville and Mrs. Rocky
