Weekly Newsletter - February 21-25

Dear Families,

We hope you enjoyed the unexpected ice day as much as we did! We are so glad we still got to celebrate 2-22-22!! Twins and tutus and ties...oh my!

ELA
This week in ELA we read books about  Abraham Lincoln, George Washington and what it is like to be a president. One of our read alouds was titled Abe Lincoln's Hat by Martha Brenner.  While listening to the story, we worked on the skills of predicting, problem and solution, and making connections.  Our focus vocabulary words were President and slavery...be sure to ask us what those words mean.

We loved making connections with Abraham Lincoln and coming up with ideas of what we would keep in our tall top hats.  Check out the cute project we made to go along with our writing!

(I would keep my blanket in my hat.)
(I would keep my stuffie in my hat.)
(I would keep popcorn in my hat.)

This week our phonics focus was ing.  Be sure to ask your child to sing the -ing song that helps us remember how to read and spell -ing!
Our 2 new sight words were your and if. We had fun playing a Presidents themed game of Tic Tac Toe each morning this week! Ask your child to read the words and tell you who won our game!
We hope you enjoyed listening to our poem this week! We loved learning about the different presidents on each coin!
During our Writer's Workshop, we continue to work on our Informative Books. We are using the Bubble Maps we wrote at home to help us with our writing.  We can't wait to share our books with you!

Math
This week in math we continued to look at three-dimensional shapes.  The kids engaged in sorting by attributes, investigating spheres, searching for certain shapes around the room and building shapes with polydrons.  We also continue to count and compare quantities.  At home, you could ask us to count by 10's to 100 or count by 1's to 100.  If we can do both of those...ask us to count starting at 48 or 62 to 100 - we need lots of practice with these skills!

*Next week is Read Across America Week - check out the poster to see the theme of each day...

A Note from the Principal
Dear Thorson Families,

What a week! We had an unexpected day off from school and lots of fun celebrating twos. Thank you for being flexible and shifting our fun dress-up day to Wednesday. The kids (and staff) had a blast, and we had some pretty cool outfits happening here at Thorson yesterday!

Next week, we will be celebrating Read Across America week to encourage a lifelong love of reading for our students. To celebrate, there will be daily dress-up days to go with each reading theme.  Please see this document for more information.

Tell your friends and neighbors that 4K and 5K registration is still open for the 2022-2023 school year. We encourage new families to register early so we can begin to plan for appropriate classroom spaces and staffing. Information for new student enrollment can be found on our district website.

As a reminder, next Friday, March 4, is an early release day. School will end at 1:45 p.m. as teachers will be participating in professional development activities.

Have a wonderful Friday and a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Angela Little, Principal

Weekly Newsletter-February 14-17th

 Dear families,

Our Kindercardiology day was a success!  Our little doctors did a fantastic job at repairing hearts just in time for valentines day!  Thank you to all the families who helped to make the day a success.

This week we talked about the vowel team oo.  We learned that it can make two sounds, like in moon or like in book.  We have worked on the Star Words come and went.  Check out your child's Seesaw work to see how they are doing with their phonemic awareness.

The story this week was The Empty Pot.  A test to grow a plant is given by the Chinese Emperor to determine whom he will choose as the heir to the throne, but Ping, unable to make his seed grow, submits an empty pot to the Chinese Emperor and gets surprisingly happy results.  Before reading this story, we had to learn some background knowledge to help us understand the story better.

We learned that having integrity means doing the right thing even when nobody is watching.
We learned that an emperor is someone who was a ruler.  This person had a lot of power and could be very rich.
We learned all about what helps seeds to grow.

At the end of the story, we completed a story map.

Here is a video link to the story to enjoy!

We are working on our All About or informative books during writing time.  Students are taking their bubble maps and writing all about the animals they did research on.  Thank you so much for helping your kindergartner find the needed information.

Reminders:
No school tomorrow!  Teachers will be in meetings during the day.

Thank you!

A Note from the Principal
Dear Thorson Families,

Bus Driver Appreciation week is February 14-18. If your child is a bus rider, please consider sending a quick note or card to your child’s bus driver(s) expressing gratitude for the daily safe transport of our children.  Also, please continue to make sure that your child has a mask everyday if they ride the bus! The students (and families) have been doing a GREAT job of remembering this. We appreciate your attention to this!

Our optional parent/teacher conferences are coming up next week on Thursday, February 17. If you would like to sign up for a conference to discuss your child’s progress, please do so in Skyward Family Access by Tuesday, February 15. The conference scheduler will be closed after this date. Here are the directions for this. Please also remember that AMP teachers Mr. Kroenke, Mrs. Ward, and Mrs. Miller will only be available for conferences at Westlawn on the evening of conferences.

Students in 3rd-5th grade will be taking the Wisconsin Forward Exam in April. Our testing window will tentatively be April 4-19. Please mark these dates down and ensure that your child will be at school during this testing window. If you already know of planned absence for your child during this timeframe, please let the school office know right away so that we can plan accordingly for make-up sessions. More information regarding the assessment and the exact testing dates will be sent in the near future.

At Thorson, we love animals and pets, but for the health and safety of all, they are not allowed on school property. This includes drop-off and pick-up times. Please do not bring your pet with you onto school property when you drop off or pick up your child. Thank you for adhering to this important guideline.

Have a wonderful Valentine’s and Super Bowl weekend!

Sincerely,

Weekly Newsletter Feb. 7-11

Dear Families,
How can it already be 100 Days in School??!! Ask your child about our Pirate Pete Adventure!

                                                                          So much fun!!
We can't wait to see how much fun day 101 will be!!
ELA:
This week we focused on the story Just Going To The Dentist  by Mercer Mayer. While listening to the story, we worked on the strategies of predicting, retelling, inferring, making connections and stating our opinions. Be sure to ask your child his/her favorite part!
Our 2 vocabulary words were numb and cavity. Be sure to ask us what they mean!
Sticking with the Tooth Theme - our poem was Loose Tooth!  We loved singing about our friends!  Be sure to ask your child to show you our hand motions, too!

Our 2 new sight words were /got/ and /then/. Ask your child where the 3 tooth fairies were hiding in our smartboard review game! Be sure to continue practicing these words with your child at home.
Our phonics focus this week was the digraph /ck/.  We know that a digraph is 2 letters that make one sound.  In the picture below, you can see that we now know the following digraphs - /sh/ /ch/ /th/ /wh/ and /ck/.  Be sure to review these digraph sounds with us at home!
Look at our adorable Tooth Fairy!! We had fun writing labels for her during our Shared Writing time.  During reading centers, we will get a chance to "read the room" and we can take a pointer into the hallway and practice reading all of the labels we wrote...learning is so fun in kindergarten!!!
Writing:
We started our new Informational Writing Unit!! Thank you for helping us fill out our graphic organizer on the animal book we brought home.  We are looking forward to writing our own book on our special animal!
We know that nonfiction/informational books only contain facts...not opinions!
Science:
Did your kids tell you about our Rokenbok Unit??!! They are loving it! We have had the opportunity to free build with the Rokenboks - and today, we learned about engineers and what they do! We had to think like an engineer and create a measurement tool to measure different things around our classroom! Here is a peek at our little engineers!
