Winter Break December 23-January 2

A Note from the Principal
Dear Thorson Families,

Last Friday, during our professional development day,  we were able to work as a district elementary team to review and refine procedures for reporting English language arts progress, we began the process of making revisions and updates to our social studies curriculum, and we were able to train teaching staff to use the Rokenbok engineering kits. Our Thorson staff was also able to work together in our Makerspace to become more familiar with the equipment and discuss plans for student STEAM lessons and Makerspace activities that will begin when we return from winter break. We were also able to continue our work of reviewing data and making strategic instructional decisions to support the academic growth of all of our students.

Thank you to all who placed an order for our PTO “Nothing Bundt Cakes” fundraiser. If you placed an order, you will be able to pick up your bundt cakes 4-6PM  on December 22, 2021 in our Community Room (door #14).

As a reminder, if your child rides the bus to and/or from school, please remember that masks are required on the bus. We are seeing students riding the bus home who do not have a mask. We have a very limited supply of masks available at school. After we return from winter break on January 3, 2022, we will no longer be handing out extra masks to students who do not have a mask for the bus.  If this occurs, our office will call you to pick your child up from school.  To prevent this, please pack an extra mask or two in your child’s backpack. Thank you for ensuring that your child is prepared for the bus ride to and from school.

We will be busy learning right up until the end of the day on Wednesday, December 22.  Winter Break runs from December 23 through January 2.  School resumes on Monday, January 3.  We will celebrate our return to school on January 3 with a school-wide pajama day.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Angela Little, Principal

Brittany Kleeba, Assistant Principal

Green Team
Help the Thorson Green Team by turning your Coca-Cola product purchases into donations to Thorson.  You can donate by going to coke.com/give/schools and selecting Thorson Elementary.  Then scan or enter product codes from participating products.  Codes are located on the inside of caps or printed inside cardboard cases.  If you don't have the time, please bring the codes to school and put them in the RED bucket inside the front doors.  Donations received will be used to fund Green Team projects at Thorson.

Thorson is renewing its interest in the Crayola ColorCycle program.  This program converts old markers into energy as well as wax compounds for asphalt and roofing shingles. The process repurposes the entire marker, regardless of the different kinds of plastics or how they are assembled. ALL brands of markers, highlighters and dry erase markers can be recycled.  Markers can be placed in the WHITE bucket near the front doors or in the GREEN buckets throughout the building.

Yearbook
If you have not yet purchased a yearbook for the 2021-2022 school year, there is still time to make your purchase. All yearbook orders need to be placed by January 21, 2022. You may do so by signing into your Skyward account. Then select "Fee Management" and "Make a payment". There will not be extra yearbooks at distribution in late May/early June, so please purchase today.

Absent/Late Arrival-
If you are going to be late or absent, please call the Thorson attendance line at 262-376-6766 before 9:00 a.m.  Please state your student's first and last name, teacher, and the reason for the absence.  If you are going to be late and are taking hot lunch, please let us know your child's lunch choice by calling the school office at 262-376-6705.

Weekly Newsletter- December 13-17

Dear Families

Wow!  Our month is just flying by!

This week we worked on the word families -et and -ed.  We sorted, read, and made words with these word families.  Check out your child's Seesaw to see these activities!  We also learned the sight words "was" and "are." We reviewed these words in the stories, poems, and writing we did this week.  We continue to review all words and assess through the year! Please continue to work on these words with your child.

This week, we worked on two gingerbread stories.  Our first story was  The Gingerbread Man, retold by Jim Aylesworth.   While listening to the story, students were working on visualizing, retelling, problem/solution, character traits, and stating their opinion.  The children really loved it when the Gingerbread Man popped out of the oven and surprised the Old Man and Old Woman.

Our other gingerbread story was The story this week was The Gingerbread Girl by Lisa Campbell Ernst.  While listening to the story, students were working on the strategies of making predictions, retelling, answering questions, and stating their opinion.  The children really loved it when the Gingerbread Girl tamed the tricky fox.

This week, our poem was called Gingerbread Man.  Ask your kindergartner to sing it to you!   We looked at rhyming words, looked for star words, and identified the three animals chasing the gingerbread man.

We continued our love of gingerbread men by labeling a large gingerbread man during community writing.  Students labeled the face, icing, buttons, and body.  During reading around the room, students can go and read these words.  We made our own gingerbread men to add to our labels.

In writing, we are finishing up our work on our narrative stories.  We remembered to add a capital letter to start our sentences and add a period to the end of our sentences.  We are also able to add some color to our stories.

Reminders:
1. Tomorrow, students can wear their favorite holiday headband or hat.  Think Santa hats, reindeer antlers, elf ears, etc.
2. Tomorrow is decorating gingerbread houses day!  We are starting to decorate our houses at 3:00pm.

Thank you for all of your support!

Weekly Newsletter Dec. 6-10

Dear Families,
We have been working hard in Kindergarten! Can you believe there is only 8 school days before our Holiday break - WOW!

ELA
This week we focused on the story Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson. We also read a non-fiction book about Brown Bears.  We worked on many skills including visualizing, retelling, and adding to our schema about brown bears! Be sure to ask your child to share a few brown bear facts with you.

In phonics, we worked with the /ot/ and /ob/ family.  We made words, blended sounds, segmented sounds and read words with these two endings.  We could practice writing words like hot, pot, cot, shot, cob, rob, job and slob!
We loved our new poem this week! We hope you enjoyed watching us on SeeSaw!
Our new sight words were /this/ and /one/. We loved trying to find Bear's friends in our smartboard game this week.  Ask us to read the words and tell you where Raven, Hare and Mouse were hiding.

Math
We played a fun game in math this week. It is called Read My Mind - and you can play it at home too.  Mrs. Rocky picked a number and only told it to Mrs. Neuville. Then, we all wrote our numbers from 0-10 or 0-20 on our dry-erase boards.  We took turns guessing the secret number.  Mrs. Rocky would tell us if the secret number was greater or less than the number we guessed - we would then cross out the numbers on our board. We loved playing Read My Mind!

Science
We continue to learn about the Seasons and Weather.  This week our science vocabulary words were temperature and thermometer!

*Please send your child's LABELED snow clothes in a separate bag. We do not want to put wet snow pants/mittens in their backpacks.

* ALL students go outside for recess in the winter - please make sure your child has proper snow attire.

*Extra mittens and socks is always a good idea on those wet, snowy days!

*Thank you for ALL of the Gingerbread House supplies - we are looking forward to our decorating day on Friday, December 17th at 2:45.  If you will be coming in to help, please remember to check in at the office - you will need to have your driver's license and go through the Raptor screening.

*Our last day of school before Winter Break is Wednesday, Dec. 22nd. We will be celebrating with our GRINCH Day!

Have a wonderful weekend!
💚💛 Mrs. Neuville and Mrs. Rocky

NO SCHOOL TOMORROW

A Note from the Principal
Dear Thorson Families,

Thank you to all who donated toys or money to the Kapco Kids 2 Kids Toy Drive. We continue to be amazed by the generosity of our school community. We also thank our Student Council advisors and student members. They did a great job of leading this service project.

Winter weather is officially here! Students are expected to dress for the weather. This includes winter coats, boots, snow pants, hats, and gloves/mittens. When there is snow on the ground, students must-have boots, and to play off of the blacktop, they must have both boots and snow pants. We are outside for recess unless the temperature or wind chill drops below zero. As the temperatures continue to fall, we encourage families to drop off as close to 8:40 as possible, as students will need to wait outside unless the temperature/wind chill is below zero. Thank you for your cooperation with this!

There is NO SCHOOL for students tomorrow, December 10, as it is a professional development day for teaching staff.  Have a wonderful extended weekend!

Sincerely,

Angela Little, Principal

A Note from the Principal
Dear Thorson Families,

I hope that all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving break. It was great to see all of you at Parent/Teacher conferences before Thanksgiving. We are excited to continue our work with all of you as the year goes on.

For the month of December, we are working on the character trait of kindness. We will kick off our work with this character trait at our live Google Meet Jaguar Jumpstart tomorrow. We are challenging students to show kindness in both big and small ways, including participating in our annual Kapco Kids 2 Kids Toy Drive, which is being led by our Thorson Student Council. Toys are being collected through December 9. Thank you for your consideration of supporting this great cause.

The Thorson PTO is kicking off a new winter fundraiser. They are selling bundt cakes from “Nothing Bundt Cakes”, which will make wonderful holiday gifts. Please see the information below and consider participating to support the efforts of our PTO.
