Bags of Projects

Families,

Your kindergartner is bringing home a bag full of awesome projects for you all to decorate your house with.  Please return the paper bag to school so we can fill them up again next month with more cute projects!

Thanks so much!

Toy Drive

The Kapco's Kids 2 Kids toy drive will start on Monday, November 29, and last through Thursday, December 9.  There will be a box outside our classroom for students to put their toys into. Student council members will be collecting the toys from each homeroom.

There will be a buy an ornament day on Thursday, December 2.  Students can donate a dollar to the toy drive and buy an ornament for the bulletin board by the office.  There will also be a hat day or stuffed animal day on Friday, December 3.  Students can donate $1 to wear a hat/bring a stuffed animal to show their support. Students can donate $2 if they want to do both.  Student council members will be collecting the money at each homeroom on that Thursday and Friday.

There will be a contest to see which classroom brings the most money for the two theme days. The winning classroom will pick an ice cream treat or popcorn snack with juice provided by the student council.

Packer Day Tomorrow--Go-Pack-Go

A Note from the Principal
Dear Thorson Families,

We are looking forward to meeting with you for parent/teacher conferences tonight and next Monday. If you were unable to schedule a conference, make sure you send an email to the homeroom teacher to schedule a meeting. Please be aware that most of the teachers are booked solid on the conference evenings. They will have to stick to a strict schedule in order to accommodate all families. If you are unable to attend the conference you scheduled, please let the teacher know as soon as possible and make sure you are on time for your appointment. Thank you in advance to all the volunteers who donated and helped coordinate meals for our staff on conference nights! It really helps on these long days and busy nights!

We have been experiencing issues with Pokemon cards. Please note that Pokemon cards are not allowed at school or on the bus. Students were reminded of this during morning announcements today. Please remind your child to keep these items at home.

Please be aware that we have a very limited supply of masks to give to students. If you want your child to wear a mask at school and/or if your child rides the bus, please ensure that they have at least one extra mask packed each day. Sometimes masks get wet, dirty, or break. When our limited supply of masks is gone, we will not have any extra to give out in these instances. Also, masks are required on the bus. We have a significant number of students who do not have a mask to wear on the bus at the end of the day. Starting Monday, families of students who do not have a mask for the bus will receive an email regarding this. If this occurs again, families will be called to come and pick up their child as they cannot ride without a mask. Thank you for your attention to this important matter!

Don’t forget to start your holiday shopping at the book fair. The book fair is running through November 22.  We have a great selection of books that are sure to make great gifts for your family and friends.  The Book Fair is open during both conference nights and students may shop during their IMC class time.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Angela Little, Principal
Brittany Kleeba, Assistant Principal

Weekly Newsletter- November 15-19th

Dear Families,

In Communication Arts, we have been working on the word families -ad and -an, We have also been identifying the Star Words “a” and “on”.  Please continue to practice star words with your child.  We test these throughout the school year.  The story this week was Maddi's Fridge by Lois Brandt  While listening to the story, students were working on the strategies of predicting, retelling, connecting, and identifying feelings of the characters in the story. Ask your kindergartner what their favorite part of the story was!

In writing, we have been working on telling our own true stories. We will be celebrating our hard work on Friday.  Students are sounding out words, adding spaces, and making sure they have periods to end their sentences.  We also need to remember to have our pictures match our words.  The students are doing a great job!

In math, we are working on counting by 2's.  Please practice counting by 2's to 20 with your kindergartner.  We are also working on being able to identify which number is more and which number is less.

In science, we are learning about all different kinds of weather.  We have learned about sunny, cloudy, and windy days.

Reminders:
The cold weather is here!  Be sure that your child is dressed appropriately for recess.

Make sure that your child has 2 snacks daily.

Tomorrow is Green Bay Packer Day!  Wear your green and gold!

The Scholastic Book Fair is open during conferences.

Weekly Newsletter Nov. 8-12

Dear Families,

Our first quarter of Kindergarten is in the books! Wow - time flies!! We are looking forward to meeting with you about your child's progress on the 18th and 22nd!

ELA
This week in phonics we started working on the /at/ and /ap/ word families.  We worked on making words and segmenting and blending words with these endings.  We could practice this at home, too!  Give us a few words - like...mat, pat, hat, sap, map, tap and we can sound them out for you!!

This week our poem was I'm a Little Scarecrow.  We hope you enjoyed watching them perform it on Seesaw!
We worked on 2 new sight words this week - so & no.  Be sure to ask your children to read the words and to tell you where the scarecrows were hiding in our game!
The story this week was Wemberly Worried by Kevin Henkes. Ask your kindergartner what their favorite part of the story was! While listening to the story, students worked on the strategies of predicting, retelling the key details, making a connection, and stating their opinions.  As you can see in the picture below, we also worked on the vocabulary words peek and worried!

In writing, we are continuing to write Show and Tell Stories.  This week we worked on writing a story about Cedarburg.  The kids are doing an amazing job of remembering to start their sentences with a capital letter, put spaces between words, make sure there is a period at the end of a sentence and stretching out the sounds in each word - YAY!!

In math, we read the book Butterfly Countdown.  We explored the concepts of 1 less and counting backwards.  We pretended to be the butterflies and we used unifix cubes and ten-frame counting mats to demonstrate our understanding of these concepts!

We started a new Science Unit this week!  We are very excited to learn all about Weather and the Seasons!
*Tomorrow is our 50's Day celebration!  Thank you to all of the families that donated supplies to make our day so special!
*With winter weather approaching - please remember to label your child's winter gear!

Have a fabulous weekend!

Thorson Pride Day Tomorrow-Wear your Thorson Gear!

A Note from the Principal
Dear Thorson Families,

We have officially completed the first quarter of the 2021-22 school year. It has been a great first quarter and we are excited to continue learning with all of our students as we begin the second quarter. Thank you for all of your support thus far this year! Your child’s first quarter progress report has been posted in Skyward. Please see the email sent this morning for information about changes to the progress report and for how to access it. Please review your child’s report at your earliest convenience!

For the month of November, we are learning about the character trait of citizenship. Students are learning that being a good citizen means being involved to make your community, country, or world a better place. We will reinforce this concept in our weekly virtual Jaguar Jumpstarts, in the classrooms and throughout the school this month.

Although it was rainy, we had a wonderful Veterans Day Celebration. Our first ever elementary-wide car parade was a HUGE success! The students enjoyed greeting and honoring the veterans of our community and clearly the veterans who participated were very touched by the outpouring of support. Words cannot express what an amazing experience this was for all!  We thank the Cedarburg Police Department for their assistance in leading the procession. We are also excited to announce that we raised a combined total of $3,700  for the Honor Flight cause across the three elementary schools. Thank you all for your generous donations!

Next week we kick off our Scholastic Book Fair. The Book Fair will run from November 16-22. Students will have the opportunity to shop during their library time. The fair will also be open during both conference nights. See below for more details.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Veterans Day 2021

The kindergartners honored some veterans in the community by participating in a drive-by parade.  Many veterans from all branches of the military were in their cars and drove by our school.  The students made posters to show their appreciation.  The weather was a little wet but we all had a great time!

NO SCHOOL TOMORROW

A Note from the Principal
Dear Thorson Families,

Thank you to all who came out to celebrate fall with us during our annual Halloween parade. Thank you for bearing with us as we worked through our first-ever outdoor parade. The smiles on the kids’ faces said it all! A huge thank you goes to our amazing staff for leading these efforts and making this a great event for our kids and families!

Today marks the end of the first quarter! There is no school tomorrow as this is a records day for the teachers. Your child’s first-quarter progress report will be available in Skyward Family Access next Thursday, November 11.

As the weather begins to get cooler, please be sure to send your child to school with a coat daily. Coats are required if the temperature is below 55 degrees. It is important that children are dressed appropriately for the weather. Thank you for your help with this!

Finally, don’t forget that next Thursday is our Veteran’s Day celebration. If you are able, please send in any contributions for our Honor Flight donation project and if you have a veteran who will be participating in our car procession, please sign up using this form.

Have a great long weekend!

Sincerely,

Veterans Day Activities & Service Learning Project
We have some very exciting plans in store for Veterans Day! On Thursday, November 11, we are asking that all staff and students wear red, white, and blue or patriotic clothing to show our school spirit and support for our Veterans. On Thursday the 11th, we will also be celebrating Veterans Day by having a special car procession past all three of our CSD elementary schools. Please see the attached letter for more information on this event and fill out the form at the bottom of the letter if your child has a Veteran who would like to join us for this special procession. Forms should be returned to the Thorson office by Monday, November 1.

As part of our celebration, we would like to continue our tradition of adding a Service Learning project to the day. As a district, we would like to collect money to send a veteran on an Honor Flight trip to Washington DC. We will be collecting donations for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity from Monday, November 1 through Friday, November 5. If you would like to help, no amount is too small, please send your donation in a sealed envelope labeled “Honor Flight” to your student’s homeroom teacher. Please see the attached letter for additional information on our elementary Service Learning project.
