4K--8:50-10:35--AM--12:00-1:45--PM

A Note from the Principal
Dear Thorson Families,

We have had a great week at Thorson. It has been fun to see all of the decorated pumpkins coming in for our annual Pumpkin Days celebration. The creativity of our students and families is amazing! The pumpkins will be placed outside on the benches tomorrow afternoon for you to retrieve.

The excitement for our annual Halloween parade is building.  Details for tomorrow’s parade can be found here. In the event of inclement weather, the parade will be held inside for staff and students only. If the outdoor parade is canceled, we will send an email by 11:45 a.m.  Please remember that families/guests should not arrive before 12:45 for the parade. Also, students will go back into the building at the conclusion of the parade and will be released at 1:45. Students will not be released early unless they have a pre-arranged appointment. Thank you for your assistance with this.

Starting on Monday, you will be able to sign up for our Fall Parent/Teacher Conferences to be held on November 17 and November 21st from 4:00-7:30 p.m. A separate email will be sent to you explaining the steps to follow to secure a conference time slot. Conferences will be held in person. We will also be holding our Scholastic Book Fair during conferences.

Finally,  we are continuing to prepare for our Veteran’s Day celebration. We invite veterans to join us in our special car procession past the three elementary schools. If your family has a veteran who can join us for this procession, please fill out this form.  We will also be doing a service project to collect money for Camp American Legion, which is an organization that invites veterans and their families to come together in a safe and comfortable environment. Please consider helping us with this effort. More details regarding this cause and how to donate can be found below.

Remember, tomorrow is an Early Release day. Students in K-5 will be dismissed at 1:45 pm.  4K will run a modified schedule, with the morning 4K session running from 8:50-10:35 a.m. and the afternoon session from 12:00-1:45 p.m. Please plan accordingly and remember to send a note or call the front office (262-376-6700) if your child has a change of going home plans due to the early dismissal.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Dear Families,
We are looking forward to our Halloween festivities!! We hope you are able to join us for our parade at 1:15 tomorrow!!

ELA
This week we worked on the letter sounds of u, v, w, y and z.  We practiced writing the letters, found words that begin with these letters and practiced our hand motions for each letter, too.  Our sight words were /he/ and /go/ - we are getting great at reading these words! Thanks for all of the extra practice from home - our little sight word Ninjas are moving along! Below is our sight word game for the week - see if he/she can read all of the words and tell you where the creepy carrots were hiding!
Our read aloud was Creepy Carrots by Aaron Reynolds.  We also listened to Creepy Pair of Underwear by the same author. While listening to the stories, we learned new vocabulary words, worked on the skills of predicting, retelling, stating our opinions and making connections - WOW!!

The kids have LOVED visiting the Drama Center this week during Reading Centers...pretending to be Firefighters is SO much fun!!

In Writer's Workshop, we have been working on our Show and Tell Unit.  We are presently working on  Show and Tell books about Target and The Park!  We know the steps for writing a Show and Tell piece and we are working hard on being a BRAVE writer (that's the hardest part)!

Math
This week we reviewed counting and making Tally Marks and we used everything we know about shapes and patterns to make this cool Veteran's Day Quilt!  Ask your child to explain the pattern to you!

*Tomorrow is our Halloween Party.  Remember to send your child's costume to school in a separate bag.  We will be changing into our costumes in the afternoon.

*ALL are welcome to join us for our outdoor Halloween Parade at 1:15 - see the letter from the office for more details.  Don't forget to let us know if your child's after school plans will be changing.

*With colder weather approaching, please remember to label ALL outdoor gear

**Get out your poodle skirts and bobby socks!!! We will be celebrating 50 days in school on Monday November 14th - more info will be coming!

Have a Happy Halloween!!

A Note from the Principal
Dear Thorson Families,

At all of our Cedarburg schools, safety is of the utmost importance.  We strive to maintain safe environments and have strong protocols in place so that students can effectively learn.  After being informed of hoaxes of threats made at several Wisconsin schools today, we activated several safety protocols out of an abundance of caution. Please note that Cedarburg School District did not receive any of these threats today. Staff and students are trained throughout the year on how to respond to a variety of emergency situations at school and this training will strengthen their ability to respond safely and calmly if and when a need arises. The staff did a great job of enacting these safety protocols today while continuing on with daily instruction and routines.

Students in grades K-5  have completed the iReady diagnostic assessment and their individual iReady reports are available in Skyward Family Access. For more information regarding iReady and for directions to review your child’s iReady report, please see this letter

Please be sure to take a look at the PTO newsletter that was sent out yesterday. Some highlights include an extension to the Thorson spiritwear store, which includes Cedarburg Bulldogs offerings, as well as the fall and holiday mini photo sessions that are being offered by Worzella, with a portion of the proceeds going back to the PTO.

We are gearing up for our Halloween Festivities. We will be having our annual Pumpkin Days display event, which will be held August 24-28. Families are invited to bring in decorated (NOT carved) pumpkins for display in our Thorson IMC. See here for details. Weather permitting, we will be holding our annual Halloween Parade outdoors on Friday, October 28 at 1:15 p.m. This is an early release day, with school ending at 1:45 p.m. Please see this document for important details regarding costume guidelines, the parade route, and when to arrive.

We are looking forward to a festive time next week. Have a great weekend!

Dear Families,

This week, we have worked on the letters s, p, x, and k. Students were asked to build, sort, and read these words.  We have also worked on the star words "in" and "at" Be sure that your child knows these words and the other star words that have been previously introduced.

This week we read the story Pumpkin, Jack.  It is a fiction story where the main character, Tim, grows a pumpkin and all the steps it takes to grow a pumpkin.  During this story, we learned about new vocabulary words of mold and generous.  Ask your kindergartner what these words mean.  We also learned about the life cycle of a pumpkin.  Do you know that pumpkins are at one-time green!?

At community writing, the students labeled the different parts of a pumpkin.  We worked on identifying the beginning sounds.  Students were then able to create their own pumpkins with labels.  These projects are hanging out in our hallway for all to see and learn from!

Class created pumpkin- labels that students were able to identify the beginning sounds

Individual pumpkins that students created

In writing, we are working as a class to create show and tell stories.  In these stories, we look and think about an object.  We next draw our object, then write about it, and last we can add more.  We work hard at spelling words that we don't know how to spell.  We aim to write down all the sounds we hear in a word.  It is okay if it is not spelled correctly, we can always go back and get it fixed later.  We also work on doing all-star work.  This means that we stay in the lines, have no white spaces, and use colors that make sense.  We can make pictures the way that we want when it is free-choice time.  During writing time and other times during the day, our goal is to do all-star work.

During math class, we have been working hard at making combinations of 5 and of 10.  This is called decomposing.  We take a big number like 5 and break it down to 1 and 4 or 2 and 3.  We practice this concept through hands-on activities and games.  One of the new games that were introduced was "Which bug will win" Students had an opportunity to spin one of the spinners and keep track of which bug would get to 10 first.

Take a peek at the game here

Reminders:
Be sure to LABEL your child's cold weather gear.  Many students do not know that a certain item of clothing belongs to them.

Pack TWO snacks for your child to have during the day.  Thank you to many of the families that have donated spare items for those times a snack has been forgotten.

Thank you!

Snacks Needed!

Families,

We get it; sometimes you forget to pack a snack or two for your kindergartner.  Your child is still a little hungry and needs a snack.  We often have prepackaged snacks available, but our supply is running low.  If you could donate a prepackaged snack, such as pretzels, crackers, etc., that would be so helpful.

Thanks so much!

Wear Thorson Spirtwear

A Note from the Principal
Dear Thorson Families,

As Dr. Clark shared in his email yesterday, our school followed our severe weather safety protocols during the tornado warning that occurred on Wednesday. Staff took immediate action and made the experience safe and comfortable for students.  Staff and students did an incredible job responding to this severe weather alert. I am so proud of all of them.

Tomorrow we will have our second all-school Jaguar Jumpstart in the gym. We will begin promptly at 8:50 a.m. Students and staff are encouraged to wear Thorson spiritwear or school colors.

Starting on Monday,  band lessons will be held in the Community Room. Students should enter the building at Door 14, which is the furthest entry door on the north side of the front of the building by the 4K rooms. Please drop your child off at this door for their band lesson.

Last week Friday, October 7, our teachers engaged in professional development around our new assessment tool, iReady.  We had iReady trainers teaching us how to dig deeply into student data in order to inform our instruction.  In the afternoon, teacher groups had time to dig into their data and form their student learning goal for the year.  Thank you for supporting this very meaningful time for our teachers.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,
Angela Little, Principal

October 13, 2022
Dear Families,
It's Fire Prevention Month and our Kindergarten Fire Station is looking good!! We can't wait to get a chance to visit the Dramatic Play Center next week!! In preparation - we have been setting things up and making labels for all of our fire station supplies.  We even helped write the beginning sounds for our labels...check them out in the pictures below!

ELA
This week we focused on Otis stories by Loren Long.  We worked on many skills including making predictions, sequencing, retelling and making connections and we even learned some new vocabulary words! Be sure to ask your child about our stories.  We LOVE Otis!!

We LOVED them all!!
In phonics, it was a review week.  We practiced our letter names and sounds and worked hard on isolating the beginning sounds in words that begin with these letters.  That is really tricky for many of us - it would be great to practice this at home!
Our poem this week was the Itsy Bitsy Spider.  It is not the traditional nursery rhyme - be sure to ask your child to sing it for you!!
Our 2 new sight words were /me/ and /my/.  Here is the fun game we played all week long to practice all of our words.  Ask your child where those sneaky spiders were hiding!!
During Writer's Workshop we have been  working hard on stretching out the sounds we hear in words.  Practice this at home whenever you have a chance!! You can help them stretch out the word - and have your child write the letters that make each sound.  It is age appropriate to write /rit/ for write!! We hope you have enjoyed reading and listening to the pattern books they have been writing - we are soooo proud of their work!!
Math
This week we were introduced to a new math tool! It has a few different names - number rack, math rack or rekenrek. Number racks facilitate the natural development of our kindergartners' number sense.  The 2 rows of red and white colored beads encourage our little mathematicians to think in groups of 5s and 10s.  Be sure to ask your child if they enjoyed using the math rack during math class this week!

*PUMPKIN DROP OFF!! On Sunday, October 16th, Please remember to drop off a pumpkin or 2 at DOOR #3 (southeast corner of the building) before noon.  Look for the Neuville/Rocky sign on the bin.  Thank you!!

*Please remember to send 2 snacks each day!

*Our extra snack bin is running low for those children that do not have a snack from home.  Any prepackaged snacks (nutri grain bars, goldfish cracker packages, mini pretzel packages, veggie straw packages, etc) would be greatly appreciated!!

Have a great weekend!

NO SCHOOL TOMORROW

A Note from the Principal
Dear Thorson Families,

We are already into the month of October. This month, we are working on the character trait of cooperation. We are excited for our next all-school Jaguar Jumpstart, which will be Friday, October 14.  We will explore this character trait more at this all school meeting and throughout the month.

In the month of October we will be having our annual Pumpkin Days event, as well as our annual Halloween parade. The parade will be outdoors again, but we have a new and improved route to ensure there is not as much congestion as last year. Get your child’s costume ready and mark your calendar for October 28 at 1:15 p.m.  More details will be coming out as we get closer to this event! If there is inclement weather, the parade will be held inside for students and staff only.

Please see the information in this Thursday folder about our second annual combined elementary Veterans Day celebration. Current and former members of our military branches will be honored by students and staff with an automobile procession past Parkview, Westlawn, and Thorson Elementary Schools. Please be sure to fill out the attached form if your child has a Veteran who would like to join us for this procession. We are so excited to be doing this procession again this year to honor our Veterans.

There is no school tomorrow as it is a planned professional development day. Enjoy the three-day weekend and the fall weather!

Sincerely,
