Thorson Thursday Folder May 26, 2022 Hawaiian Day Tomorrow! A Note from the Principal This has been a difficult week for all given the devastating events that took place on Tuesday in Uvalde, Texas. As a school community, we are shocked and deeply saddened by what happened, and our hearts go out to the families who have lost a loved one due to this senseless act of violence. Please join us in keeping the students, staff, and families of the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District in our thoughts at this time. School should and must be a place where students feel completely safe and secure. As Superintendent Bugnacki shared in his email yesterday, we will have an increased police presence in and around our buildings as an added precaution, and we will continue to be vigilant about safety practices and procedures. We will also continue to emphasize the importance of belonging and taking care of those in our school family. We know that children will process this news in different ways. In addition to the resource provided yesterday, here is another resource that can help you navigate these difficult topics with your children. Last night, the board approved the contract for Mrs. Brittany Kleeba to become the next principal of Parkview Elementary. Mrs. Kleeba has served as the assistant principal for both Parkview and Thorson Elementary Schools this year and is a tremendous asset to our schools and district. Although Mrs. Kleeba will be greatly missed by the Thorson community, we are excited for her to take on this new challenge and wish her the very best. Mrs. Kleeba will transition to her new role as principal of Parkview on July 1. We are currently in the process of hiring a new assistant principal for Thorson and Parkview. As we quickly move toward the end of the school year, our PBIS Committee is rolling out a fun “Countdown to Summer”. The countdown will start on June 1st and will have a different theme/activity each day based on one of the letters in the word “THORSON”. See the attached document below for more details. We will be having our last special all-school PBIS celebration on June 9, the last day of school. More information will be coming soon on this. We are excited to celebrate our last days of school together as a school community. Did you know that Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day? Memorial day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in military service for the United States. Our deepest gratitude goes to all American families who have lost ancestors and family members for our freedoms. Have a great holiday weekend! Sincerely, Angela Little, Principal *Upcoming Dates* Thorson Countdown to Summer 5th Grade Band Westlawn: Wed. June 1 Band will effectively be over after these concerts for each individual school. If students wish to return their rental instruments for the summer (if renting from White House of Music) they can drop off their instruments immediately following their concert. Please also note there will be no full band practice for either Westlawn or Thorson on Friday, May 27 as both band directors will be taking our 8th grade band to the Kalahari Band Festival that day. If you have any questions or concerts, please don't hesitate to contact us: Lost and Found Help the Thorson Green Team by turning your Coca-Cola product purchases into donations to Thorson. You can donate by going to coke.com/give/schools and selecting Thorson Elementary. Then scan or enter product codes from participating products. Codes are located on the inside of caps or printed inside cardboard cases. If you don't have the time, please bring the codes to school and put them in the RED bucket inside the front doors. Donations received will be used to fund Green Team projects at Thorson. Thorson is renewing its interest in the Crayola ColorCycle program. This program converts old markers into energy as well as wax compounds for asphalt and roofing shingles. The process repurposes the entire marker, regardless of the different kinds of plastics or how they are assembled. ALL brands of markers, highlighters and dry erase markers can be recycled. Markers can be placed in the WHITE bucket near the front doors or in the GREEN buckets throughout the building.
