Weekly Newsletter January 10-14

Dear Families,

Happy New Year! We hope you all had a wonderful, relaxing break!

We are back in the groove and working hard in kindergarten!

ELA

This week, we read Tacky the Penguin stories.   While listening to the stories, students were working on visualizing, retelling, problem/solution, inferring, and stating their opinion.  The children really loved silly Tacky! Be sure to ask your child to share their favorite part of the story!

Be sure to ask us what "companion" and "graceful" mean - they were our highlighted vocabulary words from our story!
Sticking with our penguin theme...I'm a Little Penguin was our poem this week.  Ask us to sing it for you!
Our phonics focus was the -ip and -it word families.  Ask us to write some words for you...like zip, tip, chip, ship, hit, kit and pit!  Our 2 new sight words were she and her.  Here is the game we played - ask your child where Tacky was hiding!!

During Writer's Workshop, we started a new type of writing! We are now learning how to write a "How To"  piece.  We made a snack mix together as a class and then we wrote our first "How To Make a Snack Mix" book. We are all really excited to write more "How To" books for our friends and families!

Math
We had fun learning the value of coins this week!  We played a few different games using nickels and pennies.  We had to count the values of 1 nickel and 1-5 pennies...We could practice this at home, too!

MAP Testing:
This week, for the first time, your children participated in MAP testing.  They did a great job listening and following directions! We will continue the testing next week and your child's results will be shared with you.

Thank you for making sure your child has his/her snow clothes!! Recess is sooo much fun in the snow!!

*No school 1/17 and 1/20

*If your child is planning on sending in valentines - we have 32 students between our classrooms!

Have a great weekend!
