From the Thorson Office

WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL!!

August 26, 2021

A Note from the Principal:

Dear Thorson Families,

We are excited to welcome you to the 2021-22 school year.  We hope that you and your children had a wonderful summer, and we cannot wait to see each and every one of our students (new and returning) on the first day of school. The Thorson staff is dedicated to partnering with all of you to make this an amazing year!

Below you will find important information to prepare for the first days of school!

New Staff

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce our newest member of the Thorson Staff Team, Mrs. Brittany Kleeba. Mrs. Kleeba will be the new assistant principal at both Thorson and Parkview. She will be at Thorson on Mondays, Wednesdays, and every other Friday. We are excited to have her on our team to help support our staff, students, and families. Welcome, Mrs. Kleeba!

We are also proud and excited to welcome the following new staff members to the Thorson team:

  • Ms. Jamie Keller - 1st Grade

  • Mrs. Molly Houben - 3rd Grade

  • Mrs. Cassie Wilson - Music

  • Mrs. Stephanie Cox-Yuen - Psychologist (shared with Parkview)

  • Mrs. Betsy Whitcomb - Instructional Aide

Please join me in welcoming all of these new staff members to the Thorson Community.

We will also again be working with the Westlawn AMP teachers, who will be at Thorson every third day to teach one section per grade level. The Westlawn AMP teachers are:

  • Seth Kroenke - Physical Education

  • Sasha Miller - Art

  • Brittany Ward - Music

Arrival and Dismissal Routines

Arrival and dismissal routines will be the same as last year. The details of our arrival and dismissal procedures can be found here!  Please review this information carefully and note the following:

  • Arrival begins at 8:35 a.m.  NO students may be on campus before this time!

  • Students will enter and exit the building through designated doors at 8:40 a.m.  (See the map in the procedures for details.)

  • There is no car traffic in the inner circular driveway closest to the school building.  This is reserved for bus traffic and vehicles utilizing handicapped parking only.

  • Parents and students walking must use the crosswalks.

  • For safety and security, parents are not allowed to walk their children to class. Please say your goodbyes at the door.

 School Schedule

Your child’s teacher will communicate their daily schedule with you.  Here are the details of our basic school schedule:

Student Arrival Begins 8:35 a.m.
Students Enter Building 8:40 a.m.
School Day Begins at 8:50 a.m.
School Day Ends 3:35 p.m.

Covid Mitigation Measures

The covid mitigation measures that have been identified for this school year can be found on our district website at this link. As always, the health and safety of our staff and students is a priority! We will continue to emphasize and provide ample opportunities for children to wash and sanitize their hands, as well as continuing with our enhanced cleaning and sanitizing routines. We will create warm and accepting classroom and school environments where all individuals are respectful to one another and feel comfortable exercising their right to choose to wear face coverings or not. Staff members will provide support and guidance for those who choose to wear a face covering.

 Birthday Treats and Snacks

Due to health and safety concerns with allergies, we will no longer be allowing communal birthday treats/snacks. Please see this letter from the elementary principals regarding this.  Your child’s teacher will ensure that your child’s birthday is recognized/celebrated in other ways.  Please follow the directions of your child’s teacher regarding daily snacks.

Lunch

There will be two grade levels eating in the cafeteria each lunch period. The space and layout of our renovated cafeteria do not allow for additional seating for lunch guests. Therefore, we will not be able to accommodate families/parents coming in to eat with their children. Thank you for your understanding.

Sneak Peek

Our annual Sneak Peek event is back this year. We hope to see all of you at this event on Monday, August 30th from 3:45-5:00 (for families with last names starting with A-L), and from 5:00-6:15 (families with last names starting with M-Z).

As always, please feel free to reach out to me, the school office, or your child’s teacher if you have questions or concerns.  We are here to help!  We look forward to seeing all of you in just a few short days!

 Sincerely,

 Angela Little, Thorson Principal
