A Note from the Principal Dear Thorson Families, We are in the final stretch of the school year, with just 13 school days left. As we enter these last few weeks, we are busy planning for many culminating activities to celebrate our year together. There are many field trips and other fun activities going on these last few weeks. Stay tuned to emails/newsletters from your child’s teachers for all of the details. Our Green Squad Penny War is going well. As of Wednesday afternoon, we have raised over $1,600. Tomorrow is the last day to bring in spare change for this fundraiser. There will be prizes for the top three classes. First place is an activity/game in the school forest and a treat. Second place is extra recess for the class and a treat. Third place is reading time outside with the class and a treat. Thank you to all who have already contributed! Now is the time to order your school supply kits for next year. The Thorson PTO is working with The Write Stuff so parents can quickly and easily take care of their child’s school supplies for next year. To order your school supply kit, click here. Kits will be delivered directly to school, or you can choose home shipping for a fee. Free shipping to school ends on June 15. We have a staffing change in the front office. Office assistant Katie Burton will be moving on to a different position. We thank Katie for her service to the students, families and staff at Thorson and wish her the very best. She will certainly be missed. We will be covering the office internally for the rest of the school year. Starting Monday, May 20, please send any going-home plan changes to Lindsay O’Morrow (lomorrow@cedarburg.k12.wi.us) and Kelly Birmingham (kmccabebirmingham@cedarburg.k12.wi.us). Thank you! Have a great weekend! Sincerely, Angela Little, Principal Scott May, Assistant Principal New and ExcitingPenny War 1-2-3-4 We declare a penny war! May 15-19, Thorson will be collecting spare change. Classrooms will collect coins and dollar bills in competition with all the other classrooms for the highest total collected per room. The classroom with the most money collected wins an extra recess in the school forest with activities and a snack. Classroom totals will be updated throughout the week. The winning classroom will be announced Monday, May 22. All funds raised will support the installation of permanent story stroll structures. Thorson Field Day We are looking for volunteers interested in helping supervise a station at Field Day on Wednesday, June 5th. Help us send our students off with a fun last day of school! If you are interested, please use this link to sign up. Please note, we are also collecting bubbles and chalk again this year if you can donate. We appreciate all our families and their help in making these fun days possible at Thorson! Any questions about volunteering for field day may be directed to Katie Kowalkowski at kkowalkowski@cedarburg.k12.wi.us Planter Box Help Needed The Thorson PTO granted each grade level a planter box! We are looking for volunteers to each take a week and help tend to our boxes throughout the summer. We have 7 total planter boxes so feel free to bring a friend or two. We would like each volunteer to take a week where they pull weeks, water plants, and harvest any crops. You are welcome to keep what you pick, give it away, or donate it. Sign up here! Thorson PTO Oak Leaf Award Nominations It is time to nominate a deserving Thorson parent or staff member for the Thorson Oak Leaf Award. The purpose of this award is to recognize a Thorson school community volunteer who has gone “above and beyond the call of duty” to make Thorson a better place for our children, students, and school community. Perhaps you know someone who has given much of their own time as a Thorson volunteer or someone who has selflessly contributed whenever they were asked. Maybe it is someone who has helped out “behind the scenes” at almost every PTO event, without a chairperson title or recognition, or perhaps there is someone who has done something exceptional for our school this year. You may want to nominate someone who has contributed throughout the years and is now “moving on” to middle school. There are plenty of people who have helped these past several years, and continue to be involved in supporting our school community this year. We thank ALL OF YOU who have helped make this year and every year a little brighter with your support! **Special Note re: Staff Nominations: The Thorson Elementary Oak Leaf Award is a "volunteer" award, and is not meant to be a teaching or staff excellence award. This award is meant to recognize someone who has given of their time to PTO and the Thorson school community outside of their typical teaching/staff role.** Oak Leaf Award Nominations are due by Friday, May 17th! Oak Leaf Award voting is meant for the Thorson Elementary school community only. Voters must be current members of Thorson PTO in order to vote. Voting will take place May 20th - 31st. Be sure to check your emails and Thursday Folders when it comes time to vote! THORSON'S END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR COUNTDOWN It's hard to believe that we are approaching our last few weeks of the school year, but it's time for our annual Countdown to Summer. Our PBIS team has planned a fun end of the year countdown that we invite students to participate in to help end with some fun and send us off to summer with a smile on our faces! Get your school supplies now for next year! The PTO has once again arranged a convenient school supplies kit service for the upcoming school year! The Write Stuff, a woman-owned company located in Elburn, IL, has been providing excellent service for the past four years. This service is a great way for busy parents to save time and effort! This service allows you to purchase a kit that includes all the items on your child's school supplies list for 2023-24. It is completely optional! The benefit is that it helps you avoid the rush in August trying to find that [insert specific color] notebook or other item that you would not expect to be hard to find (spoken from experience). The bonus is that you can edit your kit to remove anything you already have (e.g., markers or pencils leftover from this year or headphones you don't need more). This service does not benefit the PTO in any way (e.g., it is not a fundraiser). The Write Stuff store for Thorson Elementary School is now open at www.write-stuff.com/storefront/school/thorson. If you order by June 15th, you will enjoy free delivery to the school in August. The store will be open until July 15th, with standard delivery fees applied after 6/15. You can find the 2024-25 school supplies lists here. Please note that there are a few items on the list that The Write Stuff does not carry, such as art smocks, shoes, and backpacks. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact Nicole Stein at (414) 640-1985 or nicole@steinmediadesign.com! The next PTO meeting is on 06/03 at 7:00 p.m. Here is the agenda for the meeting. Reserve the Thorson Celebration Rock for the 2023-2024 school year Reservation requests for the Thorson Celebration Rock are now being accepted for the 2023-2024 school year. For $10, your birthday message will be displayed on the rock for a 24-hour period. Questions? Reach out to Jamie Allison at 305-527-8006 or jjeallison@gmail.com.
