Milwaukee Bucks Day Tomorrow-Wear your Bucks gear!!!-GO BUCKS!

A Note from the Principal

Dear Thorson Families,

While our Wisconsin weather continues to be a bit unpredictable, we were excited to have a beautiful day on Monday (Earth Day) for our Green Squad clean up day. The students and staff did a wonderful job cleaning up our school grounds. Thank you to the Green Squad for all of their work in arranging this activity. Also, don’t forget that the Green Team is collecting gently worn, used, or new sneakers. Every pair makes a difference to raise money for our Green Squad and to keep sneakers out of landfills.

In PTO news, we will be having our ThorSON Olympics boys event this weekend. The event is this Sunday (4/28) from 1:00-3:30 p.m. at Thorson. We are looking forward to a great event. See below for more details. Also, mark your calendars for our next PTO meeting, which will be held on Monday, May 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Room.

Looking ahead, Friday, May 10 is an Early Release Day, so please mark your calendars. K-5 students will be dismissed at 1:45 p.m. 4K will run their modified early release day schedule.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Angela Little, Principal
Scott May, Assistant Principal

New and Exciting

Thorson Green Team

Did you know that your gently worn sneakers could help the Thorson Green Team? Well, they can and here’s how… Starting April 8, our team is participating in a fundraiser where there is nothing to buy or sell; All we need is your support and your gently worn, used, or new sneakers! Start in closets and gather as many pairs of sneakers that you no longer want; maybe you’ve out-grown them, they’re out of style, or out of season. We can only accept athletic shoes.  No other shoes please.  You can ask your neighbors and friends to help out. Every pair counts! Please bring the sneakers to school and place them in the collection container inside the front doors.  The sneakers that we all collect will help raise money to support our program AND will help our environment by keeping sneakers out of landfills.

CCSF Color Rush(free t-shirt if you register by May 8th)
Kicking off the summer while honoring the hard work of local students and teachers, the Color Rush created by Cedarburg Community Scholarship Fund brings families together to enjoy the outdoors every May. Last year, over 300 participants enjoyed the one-mile fun run around Centennial Park! New this year, the CCSF will give back to our PTO a $1 for every registered runner that selects Thorson as their school.
The second annual Color Rush is on May 30 at 5:30 p.m. and includes "blasts" of non-toxic color powder that add some good clean fun to a run that the entire family can complete.  Food vendors, swag bags, raffles and other colorful activities make it a full event.
The entry fee for the event is just $15 per person and includes a T-shirt for registration by May 8th.  Sign up today at  runsignup.com  and search "CCSF Color Rush" Be sure to select our school for the PTO give back!

It has been a great week in kindergarten! We loved celebrating Earth Day by cleaning up our Thorson grounds - many hands make light work!!

ELA SKILLS
This week, we focused on adding some new tricky words to our reading vocabulary.  We learned where, to, why and no.  We also practiced the correct formation of our uppercase letters.  We are doing a great job of printing our letters!  We are trying to make sure that our tall letters are tall and our small letters are small - be sure to notice how neat we are printing!!

KNOWLEDGE
This week, we read the story The Very Impatient Caterpillar.  While listening to the story, we worked on the strategies of predicting, retelling, inferring, and making connections.  We all thought this was a super silly story! Be sure to ask us to retell it to you!
Our vocabulary words this week were impatient and transform.  Ask us to use these two words in a sentence for you!
We also listened to these 3 non-fiction books on Caterpillars and Butterflies.  We loved learning about the Life Cycle of a Butterfly and about butterflies that migrate.

And of course we had to make a few cute projects to go along with our stories!
In honor of Earth Day, we learned a poem about Recycling!  We even learned sign language for the words recycle, reuse, green and clean.  Be sure to ask us to show you the motions for this poem!

MATH
In math, we are working on the concept that a teen number is 10 and some more.  We have used double ten frames to explore and work on this idea. One of the games we played was "Teen Number Flash". we worked with our partner to build the teen number that was flashed on the Smartboard.  We had to build it 2 different ways... Five-wise and pair-wise - be sure to ask us what this means!!

Weekly Newsletter April 15-19th

 Dear Families,

During Skills this week, we started a brand new reader.  It is called Zack and Ann.  Now that we are such good readers, we must read the story (all by ourselves!) and answer comprehension questions!  We can do it!  We have practiced returning to the story if we don't know the answer.  We make sure that we write our answers in complete sentences.  We are amazing!

Also during skills we started to practice identifying and writing our uppercase letters.

This week in ELA, we read Piggie Pie by Margie Palatini. While listening to the story, we worked on predicting, visualizing, retelling, inferring, and making text-to-text connections!! It was hilarious - we all LOVED this story! Be sure to ask your child about his/her favorite part!

Enjoy a video of the story!

We all know what cackled and lumbered mean...ask us to tell you!

We practiced reading our tricky words- many new ones were added!  We had to read them and find them in our game all week.  Be sure to ask us where those sneaky piggies were hiding!

In math, we are working on solving subtraction story problems.  We are learning to draw pictures and write equations to show our knowledge!

No school on Friday, April 19th.  Teachers have Professional Development/Grade Level Meetings

Monday, April 22nd is Baseball day!  Wear your favorite baseball team's spirit wear!  We will have a fun day filled with lots of baseball themed activities.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Our Weekly News April 8-12

April 11, 2024

Dear Families,

It has been a great week in kindergarten! We are working hard and having fun! We had a visit from the PRINCIPAL FOR THE DAY - Principal Peterson!  She corrected our work, played a game with us, and even listened to us read! We loved having her in our room!!

ELA SKILLS

This was a review week in skills.  We practiced reading and writing words with double consonant letters like small, add, mitt, chick, buzz and toss. We also worked hard on recognizing and spelling all of our tricky words.  Here is a picture of the game we played each morning this week.  Be sure to ask your child to read these words for you.

ELA KNOWLEDGE

The story this week was Chickens Aren't the Only Ones.  It is a nonfiction story about all the oviparous animals- animals that lay eggs.  Ask your kindergartner to tell you about an oviparous animal.

We were so excited about adopting an oviparous animal!! We filled out a certificate about our peep, we took good care of our peep all day long - we even took them out for a little walk to the office!  Be sure to ask your child about their peep!!
Here is a link to the video of our story for you to enjoy!

MATH

In math, we are working on the concept that a teen number is 10 and some more.  We have used double ten frames to explore and work on this idea.  The students would also look at two double tens frame cards and determine which card is more and which is less.
