Weekly Newsletter- October 2-6

Dear Families,

Happy October!  We finished our first month of kindergarten and we are doing such a great job at learning the rules and routines of kindergarten.  We have been so busy!

Skills:
The students are learning all about the sounds m, a, t, and d.  We have been practicing identifying words that begin with these sounds.  We have been making words that we can read with these sounds like "at" and "mat".  Pretty amazing!

The students have been working hard at drawing the picture that corresponds with each sound.  Please encourage your kindergartner to form the m, a, t, and d correctly!

Knowledge:
We are continuing our work on the Five Senses!  This week we learned all about Ray Charles and Helen Keller.  Ask your kindergartner all about these remarkable people.  We reviewed all of our five senses and how we use each one.  When we look at a rainbow, we are only using one sense- our sense of sight.  When there is popcorn, we can use all five senses!  We can see it, we can smell it, we can touch it, we can hear it (popping), and of course, we can eat it!

Math:
We are working on subitizing to five.  We are also working on decomposing numbers to five.  For example, 1 & 4 make 5, 2 & 3 make 5, etc.

Enjoy the video to practice subitizing!

Science:
We have learned that the sun is the only star that we see during the daytime.  We know that the sun appears to be bigger and brighter because it is much closer to us than the other stars we see in the sky.

Reminders:
**Continue to practice self-care skills with your child.  Many friends have difficulty zipping up their coats and tying their shoes.

** Make sure that you empty your child's folder and homework folder nightly.

** Early Release tomorrow!!  Teachers will be having professional development and working in grade-level meetings.

** Monday is Green Bay Packer Day!  Wear your green and gold to cheer on the Packers!
