Weekly Newsletter -October 4-8th

Dear Families,

Reading:
During reading this week we read the story Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems.   While reading the story, we worked on a number of reading strategies: predicting, retelling, finding the setting, and making connections to the story.  Ask your kindergartner what they liked best about the story!  We also read the other stories in the Knuffle Bunny series.  These are such fun books!

Word Work:
Also during reading this week we have talked about the letters g, q, e, and o.  Students were asked to identify words that start with these letters and words that do not start with these letters.

We worked on the star words "you" and "my" Please be sure to review them with your child because they will be tested on them throughout the school year!   Many friends are making great progress!

Writing:
In writing, you may have noticed students coming home with some writing samples.  The work that your child does on the front is being done the whole group.  Students practice drawing, labeling, sounding out words and labeling with me.  Students then have the opportunity to write their own stories on the back or color the picture in.  Encourage your child to write at home and use "turtle talk"  (Talking very slowly to hear all the sounds in the word)

Science:
We have learned that the sun is the only star that we see during the daytime.  We know that the sun appears to be bigger and brighter because it is much closer to us than the other stars we see in the sky.

Reminders:
**Continue to practice self-care skills with your child.  Many friends have difficulty zipping up their coats and tying their shoes.

**Please be sure that your child brings TWO snacks for the day.
