A Note from the Principal Dear Thorson Families, We had an amazing week during National Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week! As always, we are humbled by the outpouring of support from our community. On behalf of the entire staff, we thank you for all of the wonderful treats we received this week. Each day there was something special for staff from the PTO, and so many students came in each day with cards, notes, and other surprises for staff members. Thank you to the PTO, all of the volunteers, and our wonderful families for the efforts to make this a special week for the staff. We are so very grateful. Next week we are kicking off our Green Squad Penny War. The Green Squad is raising money to continue to support activities in our outdoor spaces. Our efforts with this fundraiser last year allowed us to obtain story stroll structures for the woods, which have recently been installed! Please consider sending your child with their spare change and dollar bills to contribute to this fundraiser. This will be a friendly competition, and the classroom that collects the most money will win an extra recess in the school forest with activities and a snack. The Penny War will run from May 13-17. The search for the next principal of Thorson is underway. The first round of interviews is being held this evening. There is a group of parents and a group of staff members who will be participating in this first round. Thank you to those who volunteered to help with this important task. We will provide further updates on the process as they are available! Tomorrow, Friday, May 10, is our last early release day of the year. All 5K through 5th grade students will be dismissed at 1:45. The morning 4K session will end at 10:35 and the afternoon 4K session will run from 12:00-1:45. If you have alternative dismissal plans for your child(ren) on Friday, please contact the school office. Have a great weekend! Sincerely, Angela Little, Principal Scott May, Assistant Principal New and Exciting5th Grade Band Families Just a quick reminder that we have our combined 5th grade band concert next Monday, May 13th, at 7:00 PM in the Cedarburg Performing Arts Center. Students should dress up for this concert, and should arrive at 6:40 PM with their instruments and music. The CPAC has stands for us, so please do not bring your portable band stand to the concert. After the concert: Regular lessons and full band rehearsals will continue after the concert until the end of the school year. Each elementary school still has one more performance during their school day during the last week of school.Upcoming Cancellations: There will be no lessons or full rehearsals May 14th-17th, or Thursday, May 27th. Additionally, we will be discussing Summer rental information and instrument returns at the concert with a representative from the White House of Music.Thank you and please let me know if you have any questions at awestgate@cedarburg.k12.wi.us Penny War 1-2-3-4 We declare a penny war! May 15-19, Thorson will be collecting spare change. Classrooms will collect coins and dollar bills in competition with all the other classrooms for the highest total collected per room. The classroom with the most money collected wins an extra recess in the school forest with activities and a snack. Classroom totals will be updated throughout the week. The winning classroom will be announced Monday, May 22. All funds raised will support the installation of permanent story stroll structures. Thorson PTO Oak Leaf Award Nominations It is time to nominate a deserving Thorson parent or staff member for the Thorson Oak Leaf Award. The purpose of this award is to recognize a Thorson school community volunteer who has gone “above and beyond the call of duty” to make Thorson a better place for our children, students, and school community. Perhaps you know someone who has given much of their own time as a Thorson volunteer or someone who has selflessly contributed whenever they were asked. Maybe it is someone who has helped out “behind the scenes” at almost every PTO event, without a chairperson title or recognition, or perhaps there is someone who has done something exceptional for our school this year. You may want to nominate someone who has contributed throughout the years and is now “moving on” to middle school. There are plenty of people who have helped these past several years, and continue to be involved in supporting our school community this year. We thank ALL OF YOU who have helped make this year and every year a little brighter with your support! **Special Note re: Staff Nominations: The Thorson Elementary Oak Leaf Award is a "volunteer" award, and is not meant to be a teaching or staff excellence award. This award is meant to recognize someone who has given of their time to PTO and the Thorson school community outside of their typical teaching/staff role.** Oak Leaf Award Nominations are due by Friday, May 17th! Oak Leaf Award voting is meant for the Thorson Elementary school community only. Voters must be current members of Thorson PTO in order to vote. Voting will take place May 20th - 31st. Be sure to check your emails and Thursday Folders when it comes time to vote! Thorson Countdown to Summer! Thorson Green Team Did you know that your gently worn sneakers could help the Thorson Green Team? Well, they can and here’s how… Starting April 8, our team is participating in a fundraiser where there is nothing to buy or sell; All we need is your support and your gently worn, used, or new sneakers! Start in closets and gather as many pairs of sneakers that you no longer want; maybe you’ve out-grown them, they’re out of style, or out of season. We can only accept athletic shoes. No other shoes please. You can ask your neighbors and friends to help out. Every pair counts! Please bring the sneakers to school and place them in the collection container inside the front doors. The sneakers that we all collect will help raise money to support our program AND will help our environment by keeping sneakers out of landfills. CCSF Color Rush(free t-shirt if you register by May 8th) Kicking off the summer while honoring the hard work of local students and teachers, the Color Rush created by Cedarburg Community Scholarship Fund brings families together to enjoy the outdoors every May.
