Our Weekly Newsletter December 11th - December 15th

December 14th, 2023

Dear Families,

It's GINGERBREAD WEEK!! We are so excited to make our very own Gingerbread Houses tomorrow!! Many thanks to ALL of the families for the supplies and helping hands!!

ELA  SKILLS
This week we were introduced to the sound of /k/.   We listened for this sound in words, we blended this sound to make new words and we segmented words that contained this sound.  We also learned the correct way to draw a picture of the /k/ sound.  Be sure to ask your child to blend and read some words like Ken, Kim, kid, kin, kip, and kit.  We also read a new Big Book.  It is called Ox and Man.  We are excited to have a chance to read this book on our own!  This week our new tricky word was - look.  Be sure to practice ALL of our tricky words each night - one, two, three, the, a, blue, yellow, and look.
This was our game review this week! Be sure to ask us to read the words and tell you where cookie and friends were hiding!!

ELA  KNOWLEDGE
We LOVED learning all about the farm! It was so fun listening and learning from Farmer MacDonald!  We were exposed to so many new academic vocabulary words this unit.  Be sure to ask us the meaning of these words: pasture, harvest, crops, grazing, pen, flock, spoil, shelter, tools, grains, produce, ripe, collects, and valuable!! We loved decorating our room to look like a farm, too.  To end our Farm Unit, we had a visit from Lulu the chicken, 2 very special Veterinarians and we made our own butter - YUM!!  Our new Unit is going to be all about Native Americans! We are so excited to learn all about Native Americans and to compare and contrast the different tribes.

MATH
We played a fun game in math this week. It is called Read My Mind - and you can play it at home too.  Mrs. Rocky picked a number and only told it to Miss Sidney. Then, we all wrote our numbers from 0-10 or 0-20 on our dry-erase boards.  We took turns guessing the secret number.  Mrs. Rocky would tell us if the secret number was greater or less than the number we guessed - we would then cross out the numbers on our board. We loved playing Read My Mind! Play this fun game with us at home!

SOCIAL STUDIES
We continue to learn about our school and community.  This week we focused on our neighborhoods.  We learned that there are many important places in our neighborhood - like post offices, police stations, fire departments, libraries, grocery stores, schools, doctor offices, and more!

* Tomorrow is Festive Friday!  Your child can wear their favorite Ugly Christmas Sweater!

*Please send your child's LABELED snow clothes in a separate bag. We do not want to put wet snow pants/mittens in their backpacks.

* ALL students go outside for winter recess- please ensure your child has proper winter attire.

*Extra mittens and socks are always a good idea on those wet, snowy days!

*Thank you for ALL of the Gingerbread House supplies - we are looking forward to our decorating day- tomorrow,  Friday, December 15th at 2:50.  If you will be coming in to help, please remember to check in at the office.

*Our last day of school before Winter Break is Friday, Dec. 22nd. We will be celebrating with our GRINCH Day! Be sure to sign the permission slip!

Have a wonderful weekend!
💚💛 Mrs. Neuville and Mrs. Rocky
