Our Weekly Newsletter- November 13-November 17

Dear Families,

Skills: We learned the tricky words “a” and “the”  We know that these are tricky words because we are not able to sound them out.   We practiced writing these words and then read these words in phrases.  These words are now added to our tricky word wall along with one, two, and three.  Please practice writing and reading these words with your child.

Knowledge: We are wrapping up our plant unit!  This week students learned how plants can help us.  We learned that many foods, medicines, clothes, and even tires come from plants!  We also learned that when a plant makes its own food- through photosynthesis gives off oxygen.  We need oxygen!  Thank you, plants! How cool is that!  Students also learned about George Washington Carver.  He was a botanist who found many uses for plants.  Ask your kindergartner all about it!

Math: we are continuing to work on counting by 2's to 20.  Please continue to practice this with your kindergartner.  We are also working on our combinations to five.  For example, 2 +3=5, and so does 4+1=5.  To show our understanding, we are practicing writing equations.  We learned that we must be very careful where we place our symbols.  Writing 2=3+5 is VERY different than writing 2+3=5.  We will continue to practice writing equations throughout the school year.

The cold weather is HERE!  We do go outside twice a day for recess.  Please send your child with the proper LABELED winter gear.  It may be a good idea to send in a spare pair of mittens/gloves and socks.  Nobody likes to have wet gear.

Parent/Teacher conferences are on Thursday and Monday.  We look forward to meeting with all of you.

Scholastic Book fair is open during conferences.

No school next Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.  Happy Thanksgiving!

Love,
Mrs. Neuville and Mrs. Rocky
