Our Weekly News May 8-12

Dear Families,
We have ALL enjoyed the sunshine and warm weather this week!! I'm not sure who is happier about not having to wear coats, hats, gloves or boots - teachers or students😉

Thank you all for the beautiful notes, cards, and goodies for Teacher Appreciation Week - you really touched our hearts.  The darling bags filled with all of our favorite things - are AMAZING! We will have so much fun eating, drinking and shopping!! We love working with your children and we are so impressed with how much they have grown this year!

The story this week was How I became a Pirate.  This book is  a fun adventure in which Jeremy Jacobs realizes being a pirate is cool, but maybe not all it’s cracked up to be! While listening to the story, students were working on predicting, retelling,  making inferences and telling their opinion.   Ask your kindergartner what their favorite part of the story was.
Our vocabulary words this week were repair and slather.  Ask us to use these two words in a sentence for you!

We loved playing our hidden treasure smartboard game while practicing our sight words. We are ALL doing a really great job reading these words.  During our Guided Reading time, we are practicing writing these words, too!
This week our phonics focus was on the long u vowel sound using the u_e pattern.   Words like tune, tube, cube, and cute are a few of the long u words that we were working on.  The students practiced building, reading, and writing these words. Ask your child about our BOOM, SNAP, CLAP, SLAP game! We played it with short u and long u words.  The Tricky Teachers tried to stump the Smartie Students...but they won!!!
Everyone loved our poem about going on a Field Trip to the City Zoo! Be sure to have your child sing and do the motions for our poem at home!
We are wrapping up our Opinion Writing Unit with a piece about the worst food! You will love reading about which food your child does not want you to serve for dinner!!

MATH:
This week in math, we used a number line to play some fun games.  We had to locate numbers on the number line and find the number that was 2 more or 2 less. We also had to locate numbers on a 50's chart - wow! We are learning so much in math!

Social Studies:
We are learning about Mexico!! We found Mexico on a map, we colored the Mexican Flag and we have learned some special words in Spanish! We even watched a special movie about a boy that lives in Mexico with his family! We really enjoyed learning about his school day!! Be sure to ask us to tell you all about Mexico!

Have a great weekend!
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, be sure to reach out to us!
