Thorson Thursday Folder

April 27, 2023

A Note from the Principal
Dear Thorson Families,

Last week was a busy week at Thorson! We had our Stuff the Bus Food Drive, our school-wide spring Earth Day clean-up, Girls in STEAM Saturday, and our PTO Fancy Dance. What a fun week with many awesome activities and opportunities for our students.

Our Stuff the Bus Food Drive was a HUGE success. Across the elementary schools, we collected a total of 4,581.6 pounds of food, which is 200 pounds more than last year. The school level results were as follows:

Thorson Elementary -2,107.7 total pounds (3.92 pounds per student)
Westlawn Elementary -942.32 total pounds (3.25 pounds per student)
Parkview Elementary -1,537.61 pounds (3.05 pounds per student)

Every school did an amazing job collecting food to benefit those in need. Thank you to all for your support of this great service learning project. We are excited that the drive was so successful. Parkview Principal Brittany Kleeba and Westlawn Principal Katie Ramos will be joining us at our next Jaguar Jumpstart on Friday, May 5 to present the Stuff the Bus trophies to members of the Thorson Student Council. Way to go, everyone!

Our PTO Fancy Dance was also a great success. Thank you to the chairs and volunteers of the event. It was great to see so many students and their special guests out on the dance floor having a blast. There were smiles all around! Coming up next is the Boys Take on the Burg event, which will take place on Saturday, May 13. This is sure to be a fun event! Registration is open and information to register can be found here and on our PTO Facebook page.

Finally, The American Legion is sponsoring a Teacher of the Year Award for a deserving teacher in Ozaukee County. Nominations are currently being accepted and are due on May 15, 2023. Nominations may be submitted by teachers, students, former students, parents, administrators, or the general public. See here for more information and directions on how to nominate a teacher from our school.

Have a great weekend!

2023 Thorson Elementary PTO Oak Leaf Award Nominations
It is time to nominate a deserving Thorson parent or staff member for the Thorson Oak Leaf Award.
Please take a moment to read this whole note.
The purpose of this award is to recognize a Thorson school community volunteer who has gone “above and beyond the call of duty” to make Thorson a better place for our children, students, and school community.
Perhaps you know someone who has given much of their own time as a Thorson volunteer or someone who has selflessly contributed whenever they were asked. Maybe it is someone who has helped out “behind the scenes” at almost every PTO event, without a chairperson title or recognition, or perhaps there is someone who has done something exceptional for our school this year. You may want to nominate someone who has contributed throughout the years and is now “moving on” to middle school.
We know that these past few years have not provided as many opportunities to be involved "in" Thorson as parent volunteers, but there are plenty of people who have helped these past several years, and continue to be involved in supporting our school community this year. We thank ALL OF YOU who have helped make this year and every year a little brighter with your support!
** Special Note re: Staff Nominations: The Thorson Elementary Oak Leaf Award is a "volunteer" award, and is not meant to be a teaching or staff excellence award. This award is meant to recognize someone who has given of their time to PTO and the Thorson school community outside of their typical teaching/staff role.
Oak Leaf Award Nominations are due by Friday, April 28th!
Voting will take place May 4th - 19th.
Oak Leaf Award voting is meant for the Thorson Elementary school community only.
Voters must be current members of Thorson PTO in order to vote.
Be sure to check your emails and Thursday Folders for more info!

Our Weekly News April 24-28

 Dear Families,

It's been a great week in Kindergarten!  We earned 20 eyeballs this week!! As a special reward - we get to wear our PJ's to school tomorrow - hooray!

In ELA this week, we read the story The Very Impatient Caterpillar.  While listening to the story, we worked on the strategies of predicting, retelling, inferring, and making connections.  We all thought this was a super silly story! Be sure to ask us to retell it to you!
Our vocabulary words this week were impatient and transform.  Ask us to use these two words in a sentence for you!
We also listened to these 3 non-fiction books on Caterpillars and Butterflies.  We loved learning about the Life Cycle of a Butterfly and about butterflies that migrate.

And of course we had to make a few cute projects to go along with our stories! Our kindergarten hallways are looking pretty cute!!

We loved playing Earth Day Tic Tac Toe while practicing our sight words. We are ALL doing a really great job reading these words.  During our Guided Reading time, we are practicing writing these words - we could do this at home, too!
This week our phonics focus was on the long i vowel sound using the i_e pattern.   Words like bike, kite, slide, and hide are a few of the long i words that we were working on.  The students practiced building, reading, and writing these words. Ask us to write a few long i words for you at home, too.
In writing, we are continuing to work on our opinion stories.  We use OREO to help us remember to write our stories.  O is for opinion R is for reason E is for extra reason O is for opinion.  You can see the Anchor Chart  that hangs in our room to remind us of these steps! Be sure to ask your kindergartner all about their opinion writing this week.
Math
This week in math our focus was on developing the operational and algebraic concepts of addition and subtraction, as well as working on understanding and recording equations.  We worked on counting strategies such as using compositions of 5 and 10, counting on, doubles, counting back and thinking in 10's and 1's - WOW!! We could practice this at home, too.  Give us a story problem to solve...we could use paper and pencil or a dry erase board to solve our problem and write our equations!

Riveredge field trip will be on Thursday, May 25th

  • Field Trip is rain or shine - please dress your child for the weather.  We will be outside for the entire trip
  •  Please send a cold lunch - hot lunch will not be available on this day.  We will be eating lunch in our classrooms before the trip.  (Kids can still purchase a milk)

Wear Green Tomorrow!

A Note from the Principal
Dear Thorson Families,

Tomorrow we will celebrate Earth Day with our Green Team Clean-Up Day! We invite students and staff to wear green or nature-themed clothing to school on Friday. Grade levels will be headed outside to clean up our school grounds. Please be sure to send your child to school dressed appropriately for the weather. Students should have boots, long pants, long sleeve shirts, and warm weather gear as needed. We are excited to participate in this school wide clean up!

Due to the possibility of severe thunderstorms today, the statewide tornado drill has been postponed until Friday. Thorson will participate in the statewide drill with the other district schools on Friday and students will be prepped ahead of time by their classroom teachers so that they know what to expect. It is important that we practice various weather and safety drills so that our staff and students feel prepared, not scared, in case of an emergency.

Thank you to all who have already contributed to our Stuff the Bus Food Drive. This year, we have added a friendly competition to our food drive. The winning elementary school will receive two traveling trophies, and these trophies will be presented by the other elementary school principals wearing the winning school’s spiritwear.  Tomorrow is the last day to bring in food for the drive. Please help us collect as much food as possible to help those in need!

Students in Grades 3-5 will wrap up Forward testing today. We will be doing make-up tests for those students who need to finish up tomorrow and next week. Thank you for ensuring your child was well rested for testing. Our students worked very hard on this assessment and we are very proud of them.

We are looking forward to our PTO Fancy Dance this Saturday evening. Thank you to the event chair and all of the volunteers who are helping to ensure that this event is a success. The students are excited for this fun event. Also, please be sure to read the information below regarding the PTO Oak Leaf Award. The PTO is currently accepting nominations to honor a Thorson parent or staff member who has gone above and beyond to make our school a better place. Please consider nominating someone for this award.

Have a great weekend!

We are hoping that students can help us with this project by drawing a picture or writing a letter to any teacher at Thorson.  There is no limit to how many pictures and notes students can create.  Here is a possible note that your child could print and a list of teachers that your child could reference. Please make sure that your child has the teacher's name on it, along with his/her name. Please turn in any letters or drawings to your child's teacher by Monday, April 24th. We know that everyone is super busy, so thank you in advance for your help!

Dear Families,

We worked on the long a vowel sound using the a_e pattern this week.   Words like cake, shake, made, and tape are a few of the long a words that we were working on.  The students practiced building the words and reading the words.

The story this week was Chickens Aren't the Only Ones.  It is a nonfiction story about all the oviparous animals- animals that lay eggs.  Ask your kindergartner to tell you about an oviparous animal.

Here is a link to the video for you to enjoy!

We work on a poem each week.  This week's poem is called "Oviparous" It was perfect to go along with our story this week.  We created movements, looked for rhyming words, and sorted out word families.  We are sure you have heard this poem often at home!

In writing, we are continuing to work on our opinion stories.  We use OREO to help us remember to write our stories.  O is for opinion R is for reason E is for extra reason O is for opinion.   Ask your kindergartner all about their opinion writing.

During science, we learn about plants.  We have discussed what plants need to grow and live.

A Note from the Principal
Dear Thorson Families,

Happy 4th Quarter! The students and staff have certainly been enjoying the weather this week! We have taken the opportunity to use our outdoor spaces whenever possible. Students have been reading outside, participating in physical education class  outside, and of course thoroughly enjoying their recess this week. Looking at the forecast ahead, it looks like the weather will unfortunately be cooling down, so please be sure that your child is prepared for outdoor recess next week.

Your child’s third quarter progress report has been posted in Skyward. Please see the directions in the Thursday Folder email sent today for how to access it. Please review your child’s report at your earliest convenience!

Students in Grades 3-5 participated in some portions of the ELA Forward Assessment this week. We are so proud of the hard work and effort our students are putting in on this important assessment. Testing continues next week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Thank you for continuing to ensure that your child is in attendance, well rested, and comes to school with a charged chromebook.

Next week is severe weather awareness week in Wisconsin. The Cedarburg Schools will be participating in the  statewide tornado drill next Thursday.  We will discuss safety practices both prior to and following the tornado drill with our students.  It is important for us to communicate the importance of preparedness with our students and affirm that we practice these drills to help us stay safe.

Finally, our annual Stuff the Bus Food Drive kicks off next week. We are excited to partner with the Saukville Community Food Pantry and the other Cedarburg elementary schools to participate in this great service learning project. Our Thorson Student Council is helping to lead this project. Thank you for considering donating nonperishable food items for this cause.  See below for more information about the food drive.

Have a great weekend!

Weekly Newsletter April 10-14

 Dear Parents,

It's been a great week in Kindergarten!  We had so much fun starting off our week with Baseball Day - we hope you enjoyed all of the photos!!

The story this week was Tops and Bottoms.  It is a very silly story about Hear and Bear.  Hear asked Bear if he could use his land to plant some crops.  Bear said that he would take the tops of the plants while Rabbit would take the bottom of the plants.  When the crops were harvested, Bear was in for a big surprise!  Ask your kindergartner what happened!  While listening to the story, students worked on predicting, retelling, inferring and stating their opinion. Ask your kindergartner about their favorite part of the story!

Our vocabulary words were gathered and clever.  Be sure to ask your child to tell you what they mean.
This week in phonics,  we learned the FLOSS rule.  We practiced reading and writing words that follow this rule...like cliff, full, boss and fuzz.  Be sure to ask your child to write some of these words for you at home!
We worked on 2 sight words this week were and their. Here is the game we played to practice reading all of our sight words.  Ask your child to tell you where the veggies were hiding!
This week's poem is called "Plant Song"  Be sure to ask us about the words germination and photosynthesis!!
In writing, we are working on Opinion books.  We enjoyed eating an OREO and learned how it can help us write a great opinion paper! O is for opinion, R is for reason, E is for extra reason and O is for opinion.  You can see the anchor chart that hangs in our room to remind us of these steps! Be sure to ask your kindergartner all about their opinion writing this week.

Math
This week in math our focus was on solving story problems.  We used the strategy of drawing a picture to help us solve the problems.  We could practice this at home, too.  Give us a story problem to solve...we could use paper and pencil or a dry erase board to draw a picture to help us solve our problem and write our equations!

Thank you for all of your continued support,
💕 Mrs. Neuville and Mrs. Rocky
