Dear Families,
In Communication Arts, we have been working on the word families -ad and -an, We have also been identifying the Star Words “a” and “on.” Please continue to practice star words with your child. We test these throughout the school year. The story this week was Turkey Trouble by Wendi Silvano. While listening to the story, students were working on the strategies of predicting, retelling, connecting, and using the skill of inferring. Ask your kindergartner what their favorite part of the story was! In addition to the fiction story about turkeys, we read a nonfiction story about turkeys. We filled out a schema, new learning, and misconceptions chart all about turkeys. Ask your child something they learned about turkeys.
In math, we are continuing to work on counting by 2's to 20. Please continue to practice this with your kindergartner. We are also working on our combinations to five. For example, 2 +3=5, and so does 4+1=5. To show our understanding, we are practicing writing equations. We learned that we must be very careful where we place our symbols. Writing 2=3+5 is VERY different than writing 2+3=5. We will continue to practice writing equations throughout the school year.
In writing, we are working on our narrative stories. We are hard at work telling what happened during our 50th day of school. We are working on adding capital letters, spaces between our words, and periods at the end of our sentences. We are trying our best to sound out tricky words and write down all the sounds we hear.
The cold weather is HERE! We do go outside twice a day for recess. Please send your child with the proper LABELED winter gear. It may be a good idea to send in a spare pair of mittens/gloves and socks. Nobody likes to have wet gear.
Parent/Teacher conferences are on Thursday and Monday. We look forward to meeting with all of you.
Scholastic Book fair is open during conferences.
No school next Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Happy Thanksgiving!
Love,
Mrs. Neuville and Mrs. Rocky
