Wear Thorson Gear Tomorrow!

A Note from the Principal
Dear Thorson Families,

Happy second week of school! We have had a great week and are really getting into the groove of our school routines. Tomorrow we will have our first in-person Jaguar Jumpstart assembly to kick off the day. We are excited to bring everyone together as a school community. We are focusing on the character traits of Respect and Responsibility for the month of September.

Beginning next week, students in grades 1-5 will be taking the i-Ready diagnostic assessment. Kindergarten will take the assessment at the end of  this  month. Please see this letter for more information about i-Ready.

We are teaming up with Family Sharing of Ozaukee County to offer an opportunity for your child(ren) called “Bags in Backpacks.” This program provides an entire weekend supply of nutritious food for a child when school lunch and breakfast are unavailable on weekends. All food is provided to children free of charge and this program is confidential! Please see this letter for more information.

At Thorson, we are lucky to have an active PTO that is incredibly supportive of our school community. We encourage families to get involved with our PTO by attending meetings, volunteering, and supporting the various events the PTO hosts. Our first PTO meeting is on Monday, September 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Room. You can enter the building at Door 14. We hope to see many of you there!

If you have a change in going home plans for your child, please send a note with your child at the beginning of the school day. If there is a last minute change after 2:30, please call the school office at 262-376-6700 instead of emailing. The office is very busy at the end of the day and does not always get to email during this time. Thank you for your help with this so we can ensure that everyone gets to the correct place after school!

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Angela Little, Principal
Scott May, Assistant Principal

Families may apply to receive meals at free or reduced rate at our schools. Applications may be submitted at any time during the school year and can be found on the Cedarburg School District Website School Lunch Program or by contacting Ann Weaver, 262-376-6101.

NEW District Assessment System Launched this Fall:  i-Ready

The District utilizes a K-8 assessment system to monitor student's learning and growth over time. In the past this assessment was called MAP (NWEA's Measurement of Academic Progress). The primary purpose for an assessment system like this, is to monitor your child's progress toward Cedarburg Standards. The District uses this assessment three times a year (fall, winter and spring) and the results help to coordinate your child's personalized instruction. The switch from MAP to i-Ready stems most from the need to find an assessment system that also provides clear and concise instructional information for your child and their teacher. We want to reduce the lag time between assessment results and what your child does the next day at school. i-Ready can help us do this and will also help us consolidate a few other digital tools we have been using (Lexia and Dreambox); both of these tools will no longer be needed because i-Ready incorporates these areas right into their individualized practices. More updates to follow regarding i-Ready as we enter the first assessment cycle.

Social Studies Update

A team of teachers at our school are conducting a short-term trial of a new Social Studies resource called:  TCI.  Last year, a District team considered a few resources that they felt could meet Cedarburg Social Studies Standards, and based upon some preliminary review believed the TCI should be explored more closely along with Native People of Wisconsin.  Additionally grade 4 teachers will be exploring Wisconsin, Our State, Our Story.  Thus, at our school the following teachers will be using this resource for September and October and will be implementing one unit of study.  Here's ________(school name) Trial Team (select just your team from below):

Westlawn:  Melissa Fry, Angie Sheppard, Ann Ingham, Meghan Reilly and Charlotte Butzler
Parkview:  Ashley Miller, Jennifer French, Ben Gauger, and Steve Keller
Thorson:  Erin Staffaroni, Molly Houben, Jack Brooks

Webster:  Mike Johnson, Andrew Mindham, Kyle Peterson

We are excited at the prospects of updating our Social Studies curriculum.  More information to follow as the District Trial Team continues its research in this important area of the curriculum.
