Weekly Newsletter- April 25-29

 Dear Families,

It's been a great week in Kindergarten!  We had so much fun starting off our week with Baseball Day - we hope you enjoyed all of the photos!!

In ELA this week, we read the story The Very Impatient Caterpillar.  While listening to the story, we worked on the strategies of predicting, retelling, inferring, and making connections.  We all thought this was a super silly story! Be sure to ask us to retell it to you!
Our vocabulary words this week were impatient and transform.  Ask us to use these two words in a sentence for you!
We also listened to these 3 non-fiction books on Caterpillars and Butterflies.  We loved learning about the Life Cycle of a Butterfly and about butterflies that migrate.

And of course we had to make a few cute projects to go along with our stories! Our kindergarten hallways are looking pretty cute!!

We loved playing Earth Day Tic Tac Toe while practicing our sight words. We are ALL doing a really great job reading these words.  During our Guided Reading time, we are practicing writing these words - we could do this at home, too!
This week our phonics focus was on the long i vowel sound using the i_e pattern.   Words like bike, kite, slide, and hide are a few of the long i words that we were working on.  The students practiced building, reading, and writing these words. Ask us to write a few long i words for you at home, too.
In writing, we are continuing to work on our opinion stories.  We use OREO to help us remember to write our stories.  O is for opinion R is for reason E is for extra reason O is for opinion.  You can see the Anchor Chart  that hangs in our room to remind us of these steps! Be sure to ask your kindergartner all about their opinion writing this week.
Math
This week in math our focus was on developing the operational and algebraic concepts of addition and subtraction, as well as working on understanding and recording equations.  We worked on counting strategies such as using compositions of 5 and 10, counting on, doubles, counting back and thinking in 10's and 1's - WOW!! We could practice this at home, too.  Give us a story problem to solve...we could use paper and pencil or a dry erase board to solve our problem and write our equations!

Riveredge field trip will be on Thursday, May 26th

  • Field Trip is rain or shine - please dress your child for the weather.  We will be outside for the entire trip
  •  Please send a cold lunch - hot lunch will not be available on this day.  We will be eating lunch in our classrooms before the trip.  (Kids can still purchase a milk)
