Our Weekly News - September 7-10

 September 9, 2021

Dear Families,

Week 2 - YAY! We are doing a great job learning the rules and routines in our classroom and throughout the school! We are so proud of our kids!!

ELA

This week in phonics we focused on the letters T,A,B &H.  We practiced writing the letters, we came up with words that begin with these letters and we learned a hand signal for each sound - be sure to ask us to show you each hand signal.  We played a fun game that you can play at home - say a word that begins with T,A, B or H...and your child can use the hand signal for the beginning sound for each word.

Our poem this week was Time For School.  Look for us singing our poem on Seesaw!!

Sight words are common words in books that we expect kids to recognize instantly. This week we learned our first 2 sight words /I/ and /am/.  We practiced them every day with a tic tac toe game! Ask your child who won!  Be sure to practice these words with your child at home.
Our Read Aloud was The King of Kindergarten by Derrick Barnes.  We worked on many skills including building background knowledge, understanding new vocabulary words, naming the characters, and understanding the setting.  We even answered comprehension questions!! Ask us to retell the story for you!

 Math
This week in math we visited some of our math centers.  We started off by exploring some of our math manipulatives...

                                                                                                                   pattern blocks...

                                             unifex cubes...
                                               and polydrons..
                                              oh my!!!
Be sure to ask us which ones we liked best!

We LOVE math!

*Sweatshirt weather is coming...please remember to label all of your children's outerwear!

Have a great weekend!

Thorson Thursday Folder

Go-Pack-Go Friday!! Wear your Packer Jerseys/T-Shirts!

A Note from the Principal:
Dear Thorson Families,

We have had a successful second week of school!  Students are excited to be here and are learning new things every day. As part of our schoolwide PBIS program, we have weekly Jaguar Jumpstarts, which are short all-school meetings that celebrate our students and staff and teach about our monthly character traits. Our Jaguar Jumpstarts will be held virtually, with our first one occurring tomorrow via live Google Meet. For the month of September, we are focusing on the character traits of Respect and Responsibility.

At Thorson, we are lucky to have an active PTO that is incredibly supportive of our school community. We encourage families to get involved with our PTO by attending meetings, volunteering, and supporting the various events the PTO hosts. Our first PTO meeting is on Monday, September 13. This meeting will be held virtually at 7:00 p.m. In addition, we have our first Dining for Dollars event next week on Tuesday, September 14 at Wayne’s Drive-In. Not only can you have a great meal and support our PTO at the same time, but you can also have the chance to dunk one of our amazing staff members! See the flyer in this Thursday Folder for more information.

Finally, please remember that in a face covering -optional environment with full access to our high-quality in-person learning, the best tool to prevent the spread of illness is through diligent monitoring of symptoms, testing and taking personal responsibility.  This responsibility includes keeping your student home when they are feeling ill. It is imperative that we all do our part to maintain a safe and healthy environment for all. Here is a link to the 2021-2022 School Year Mitigation Strategies on the CSD website. All families who use Riteway bus transportation, please remember that students are required to wear masks on the bus. Thank you for your support and partnership.

Have a wonderful weekend and we look forward to a great second half of September!

Sincerely,

Angela Little, Principal

Join 5th Grade Band
This is a reminder that 5th-grade band registration meetings take place at Webster Middle School next week. Both parents and students should attend. There are four different meetings times. Please select whichever meeting date/time works best for you:

I've listed how many students we have attending each session. If you have flexibility in which meeting you can attend, I would recommend trying to come to a smaller meeting. If you'd like to switch times, please email me so I can keep track of attendance.

At this meeting, we will review our elementary band program, scheduling, and instrument rental options. Also, students will be able to try out their top three instruments to help select the best instrument for them.
