Our Weekly News Sept. 11-14

September 14, 2023

Dear Families,

The kindergartners have been doing an AMAZING job of learning all the rules and routines of kindergarten.  When the students do a great job, they earn a special googly eye.  When the students earn 10 eyes, they earn a special reward...like a special show during rest time.  Be sure to ask your child to tell you about earning eyeballs!!

Skills
This week we continued to work on our foundational skills.  We reviewed the positional words top, bottom, left, right, and middle. We practiced our tripod grips by making circles, squares, triangles, vertical lines, horizontal lines and diagonal lines.  These are all prerequisite skills for correctly forming upper and lowercase letters. In order to increase students' awareness of environmental noises and words within sentences - we counted the number of drum beats and moved forward that many steps. We also segmented spoken sentences into words and moved cubes onto our mat for each word spoken.  You could practice this with us at home.  Ask us to count the words in a simple sentence "I love you." We could hold up a finger for each word we say...or we could hop for each word!!

Knowledge
This week our Nursery Rhymes were Star Light, Star Bright, Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, Hickory Dickory Dock, Diddle Diddle Dumpling, Little Bo Peep, and Little Boy Blue.  We listened for rhyming words in each nursery rhyme, we discussed the main characters, we discussed how the rhymes were similar and different and we defined tricky vocabulary words like struck, wonder, stockings, wagging and meadow.  WOW! We have been busy!!!

We loved learning our poem for the week! We had fun singing the words and learning the actions.  We will be performing our poem on Seesaw on Friday! We know you will love it too!
Math
During math class we have been working on identifying objects to 5.  We have also been working on looking at our special math tool- the five-frame.
