Weekly Newsletter- January 2-5

Dear Families,

Welcome back!  We missed you!  We hope you had a wonderful time over break.  We are looking forward to a great 2023!

This week we talked about the word families ug/un/ut.  We worked at reading these words and writing words like bug, tug, bun, fun, nut, and shut.  We also learned the sight words "have" and “with”. We reviewed these words in the stories, poems, and writing we did this week.  We continue to review all words and assess through the year! Please continue to work on these words with your child.

The story this week was The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats.  While listening to the story, students were working on the strategies of visualizing, retelling, inference, making connections, and stating their opinion.  The children really loved looking at the beautiful illustrations in the book.  Ask us what the words packed and heaping mean.  These are new vocabulary words we learned in the story.

Here is a video link to the story to enjoy!

In writing, we have started our new writing unit!  We are working on How-To stories.  Students are asked to be able to write about something they know how to do.  For example, how to put on winter clothes, make a necklace, or make breakfast.  We are working on adding transition words to the start of our sentences.  First, Next, Then, and Last.

In math, we have been focusing on measuring with nonstandard units.  We are able able to compare the lengths of two objects.  We have also learned that we need to be precise in our measurements.  We don't want to have any gaps in our measuring! Students are also learning to use the math symbols for greater than or less.  < and >
