Weekly Newsletter-December 12-15th

Dear Families

Wow!  Our month is just flying by!

This week we worked on the word families -et and -ed.  We sorted, read, and made words with these word families.  Check out your child's Seesaw to see these activities!  We also learned the sight words "was" and "are." We reviewed these words in the stories, poems, and writing we did this week.  We continue to review all words and assess through the year!  Please continue to work on these words with your child.

This week, we worked on two gingerbread stories.  Our first story was  The Gingerbread Man, retold by Jim Aylesworth. The children loved it when the Gingerbread Man popped out of the oven and surprised the Old Man and Old Woman. While listening to the story, students worked on visualizing, retelling, problem/solution, character traits, and stating their opinion.

Our other gingerbread story was The Gingerbread Girl by Lisa Campbell Ernst. The children really loved it when the Gingerbread Girl tamed the tricky fox. While listening to the story, students worked on making predictions, retelling, answering questions, and stating their opinion.

This week, our poem was called Gingerbread Man.  Ask your kindergartner to sing it to you!   We looked at rhyming words, looked for star words, and identified the three animals chasing the gingerbread man.

We continued our love of gingerbread men by labeling a giant gingerbread man during community writing.  Students labeled the face, icing, buttons, and body.  During reading around the room, students can go and read these words.  We made our own gingerbread men to add to our labels.

In writing, we are finishing up our work on our narrative stories.  We remembered to add a capital letter to start our sentences and a period to the end.  We are also able to add some color to our stories.

Reminders:
1.  Tomorrow, students should wear their Thorson spirit wear!
2.  Tomorrow is decorating gingerbread houses day!  We are starting to decorate our houses at 3:00pm

Thank you for all of your support!

A Note from the Principal
Dear Thorson Families,

Happy Snowy Thursday!  Thank you for making sure that your child(ren) has appropriate winter weather gear at school each day.  We do require boots and snowpants to play on the snowy grass and we want to make sure that everyone has that opportunity.  Additionally, winter coats are required with the current winter temperatures. Thank you for helping us with this!

Tuesday (12/20) is Holiday Color Day. Wear red, green, white and/or blue. Wednesday (12/21) is Ugly Sweater/Tacky Outfit day. We invite all students and staff to join in the fun!

Weekly Newsletter December 5-8

Dear Families,
We have been working hard in Kindergarten! Can you believe there are only 8 school days before our Holiday break - WOW!

ELA
This week we focused on the story Bear Snores On by Karma WilsonWe also read a non-fiction book about Brown Bears.  We worked on many skills including visualizing, retelling, and adding to our schema about brown bears! Be sure to ask your child to share a few brown bear facts with you.
Hibernate and Lair were our 2 new vocabulary words. Ask us what they mean!

In phonics, we worked with the /ot/ and /ob/ family.  We made words, blended sounds, segmented sounds and read words with these two endings.  We could practice writing words like hot, pot, cot, shot, cob, rob, job and slob!
We loved our new poem this week! We hope you enjoyed watching us on SeeSaw!
Our new sight words were /this/ and /one/. We loved trying to find Bear's friends in our smartboard game this week.  Ask us to read the words and tell you where Raven, Hare and Mouse were hiding.

Math
We played a fun game in math this week. It is called Read My Mind - and you can play it at home too.  Mrs. Rocky picked a number and only told it to Mrs. Neuville. Then, we all wrote our numbers from 0-10 or 0-20 on our dry-erase boards.  We took turns guessing the secret number.  Mrs. Rocky would tell us if the secret number was greater or less than the number we guessed - we would then cross out the numbers on our board. We loved playing Read My Mind!

Science
We continue to learn about the Seasons and Weather.  This week our science vocabulary words were temperature and thermometer!

*Please send your child's LABELED snow clothes in a separate bag. We do not want to put wet snow pants/mittens in their backpacks.

* ALL students go outside for recess in the winter - please make sure your child has proper snow attire.

*Extra mittens and socks is always a good idea on those wet, snowy days!

*Thank you for ALL of the Gingerbread House supplies - we are looking forward to our decorating day on Friday, December 16th at 2:50.  If you will be coming in to help, please remember to check in at the office - you will need to have your driver's license and go through the Raptor screening.

*Our last day of school before Winter Break is Wednesday, Dec. 21st. We will be celebrating with our GRINCH Day!

Have a wonderful weekend!
💚💛 Mrs. Neuville and Mrs. Rocky

A Note from the Principal

Dear Thorson Families,

Thank you to all who donated toys or money to the Kapco Kids 2 Kids Toy Drive. The  generosity of our school community is truly amazing. We collected over $700 and have three large carts full of toys to contribute to this great cause. We also thank our Student Council advisors and student members. They did a great job of leading this service project.

Winter weather is officially  here! Students are expected to dress for the weather. This includes winter coats, boots, snow pants, hats, and gloves/mittens. When there is snow on the ground, students must have boots, and to play off of the blacktop, they must have both boots and snow pants. We are outside for recess unless the temperature or wind chill drops below zero.  Thank you for ensuring your child is prepared to be outside!

Please remember that if your child is coming to school late for any reason or is returning to school from an appointment, you need to walk your child into the office and sign them in. Students should not be dropped off without an adult outside of the normal drop-off period. Thank you for cooperation with this!

The PTO is again hosting the Thorson Chess Club, which  is currently looking for participants. This club is open to Thorson students in 1st-5th grade. Details and dates are listed below. We also have the Lego Club up and running again. This club is looking for participants and volunteers. See below for more information. Additionally, the next PTO meeting is being held Monday, December 12 in the Community Room at 7:00 p.m. We hope to see you there!

There is NO SCHOOL for students tomorrow, December 9, as it is a professional development day for teaching staff.  Have a wonderful extended weekend!

Sincerely,

Angela Little, Principal

Weekly Newsletter November 28-December 2

 Dear Families,

This week we talked about the word families op & og.  We also learned the sight words "up" and "do". We reviewed these words in the stories, poems, and writing we did this week.  We continue to review all words and assess through the year! Please continue to work on these words with your child.

The story this week was Those Shoes by Maribeth Boelts.  In Those Shoes by Maribeth Boelts, Jeremy struggles with a dilemma at school. Jeremy's Grandma tells him they can't afford the expensive high-top tennis shoes he wants, but they can get the warm winter boots he needs. All Jeremy wants are the shoes that "everyone" else has at school. When Jeremy's old shoes break, and he is forced to wear Velcro cartoon character shoes provided by the guidance counselor, he finds out who his real friends are and what he truly needs and not wants.

Here is a video link to the story to enjoy!

This week we worked on the poem Little Ole Elf.  Ask your kindergartner to sing it to you!  While working on this poem, we looked for words that started with the same letter and rhyming words.

We labeled a large elf during our community writing time.  We will be able to go back later and practice reading the words.

During writing time, we are working on narrative stories.  As a class, we wrote about 50's Day.  We wrote how we celebrated the 50th Day of school, how our teachers wore poodle skirts, and how we did fun centers that Day.  We ended our story by writing how we felt about the day.

In math, we continue to work on equations to 5.  Students need to know what number goes with 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 to make the number 5.  We played the game Fives Up to practice this game.  You can play this game with your kindergartner on the Bridges Website.  Please click the following link to play.

https://student-activities.mathlearningcenter.org/?4d7c59dc

We continue to learn about the weather and the seasons during our science time.  Ask your kindergartner what his/her favorite season is.

Reminders:
Tomorrow if you bring $1, your child can wear a hat or bring a stuffed animal to school.  Can't decide which one you want to do?  Bring $2!  All money will be used to purchase more toys for the Kids to Kids toy drive.

Please do so if you haven't turned in the permission slip for your child to watch the new animated version of The Grinch!

Thank you for all of your support!
