Weekly Newsletter - September 12-15

Dear Families,

 Your kindergartner continues to work hard and keep busy! We started our Center Time this week. Be sure to ask your child which centers they visited!! 

ELA

This week in phonics we focused on the letters I,L,R, N &M.  We practiced writing the letters, we came up with words that begin with these letters and we learned a hand signal for each sound - be sure to ask us to show you each hand signal. 

             

In poetry, we learned 5 Nursery Rhymes! You could review them at home!

We learned 2 new sight words this week - see and can.  We played a fun smartboard game to practice our words.  We had to read the word and move the square to see if one of the Nursery Rhyme characters was hiding behind it.  Be sure to ask your child to read the words and tell you where we found the characters! 

        

This week we focused on the story The Recess Queen by Alexis O'Neill. While listening to the story, we worked on the strategies of predicting, retelling, inferring, understanding the characters and stating our opinions. Be sure to ask your child his/her favorite part!

 

Our 2 vocabulary words were sassy and bossy. Be sure to ask us what they mean!

In writing, we have been working on drawing a picture and labeling what it is.  You may see some invented spelling for our labels.  This is perfectly okay!  Students are learning to hear the sounds in words and write down what they hear.  Be sure to applaud ALL attempts at beginning writing!

Math
During math class we have been working on identifying objects to 5.  We have also been working on looking at our special math tool- the five-frame. 

• Remember to have your child wear shoes that they can take on and off independently

• Make sure your child has two daily healthy snacks!

• Please practice zipping jackets and tying shoes with your child.

An orange 1/2 sheet of paper came home on Tuesday from Mrs. Wilson - our Music Teacher.  Please mark your calendars for Tuesday, June 6th! Our Kindergarten Concert will be taking place that evening!

Tomorrow is Thorson Spirit Wear Day!  Wear your favorite Thorson gear or the color blue!
