Weekly Newsletter- May 2-6th

Dear Families,

Wow!  Can you all believe that it is May?!  Thank you all for the beautiful notes, cards, and goodies for Teacher Appreciation Week.  We love working with your children.  We are so impressed with how much they have grown this year!

The story this week was Jabari Jumps.  This book is about a boy who overcomes his fear of jumping off the diving board. While listening to the story, students were working on predicting, retelling, and making inferences.   Ask your kindergartner what their favorite part of the story was.

We made cute projects of us going in the pool just like Jabari did in the story!  These projects are currently hanging in our hallway.  They remind us that summer will soon be here!

Here is a link to the video for you to enjoy!

We work on a poem each week.  This week's poem is called "In The Ocean" We looked for rhyming words, talked about vocabulary words, and sorted out words that have the silent e  and do not have the silent e.  I am sure you have heard this poem often at home!  Ask your kindergartner to sing you this poem.

In writing, we are continuing to work on writing our opinions.  Last week we wrote about something that we did NOT like.  This week, we were able to vote on our favorite activity to do during the summer.  We need to state our opinion, give a reason, provide an extra reason, and then restate our opinion once again.  Students are asked to add labels to their pictures.  Practice this at home!  Encourage your kindergartner to sound out the words and write down the letter he/she hears.

During math, we are working on measurement, emphasizing estimating, measuring, and comparing length with non-standard units.  We stress precise measuring, counting, and recording.  Skip-counting by 2s has been reintorduced.  Encourage your kindergartner to practice counting by 2s to 20.

Reminders:
Tomorrow is Thorson spirit day!  Wear your Thorson gear to show your Jaguar Pride!  If you do not have Thorson spirit wear, please wear blue.
