Thorson Thursday Folder

January 27, 2022

A Note from the Principal
Dear Thorson Families,

I hope that you are staying safe and warm during this last week of January.  We had a blast at Thorson this week with our all school PBIS celebration. The students participated in a Winter Wonderland Olympic theme. We had an opening ceremony, each class made a flag to represent their class community, students were treated to hot chocolate, and they participated in outdoor Olympic games today. Thank you to Mrs. Kowalkowski, the PBIS Committee, and our parent volunteers who helped us make this happen. The students sure enjoyed it!

Your child’s second quarter progress report will be posted in Skyward today. You will receive an email with directions for accessing the progress report in Skyward Family Access. Please be sure to review your child’s report and let your child’s teacher know if you have any questions.

Optional, in-person parent teacher conferences will be held on Thursday, February 17 from 4:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m.  Your child’s teacher may request a conference during this time, or you may request a conference if you feel that you need one.  We will open conference scheduling in Skyward for families next Thursday, February 3, and will send step-by-step directions for signing up in next week’s Thursday folder. If a virtual conference is required, please contact your child’s teacher directly to schedule this.

Don’t forget that tomorrow night is Thorson night at the CHS Bulldogs basketball game. The game begins at 7:15 p.m. Students will receive free admission, free popcorn, and be invited to participate in the pregame introductions. We hope to see many of you there. Be sure to wear you Thorson spiritwear if you join us tomorrow night. Go Bulldogs!

Sincerely,

Angela Little, Principal

Brittany Kleeba, Assistant Principal

Masks Mandatory on all CSD Bus Routes
Federal regulations require that face masks be worn by all passengers and employees on board all buses. If your student is being transported on one of our routes, please ensure your student has a mask. Students will not be able to board a bus without wearing a mask. If your student chooses not to wear a mask while at school, they may remove the mask after exiting the bus.

Green Team
Help the Thorson Green Team by turning your Coca-Cola product purchases into donations to Thorson.  You can donate by going to coke.com/give/schools and selecting Thorson Elementary.  Then scan or enter product codes from participating products.  Codes are located on the inside of caps or printed inside cardboard cases.  If you don't have the time, please bring the codes to school and put them in the RED bucket inside the front doors.  Donations received will be used to fund Green Team projects at Thorson.

Thorson is renewing its interest in the Crayola ColorCycle program.  This program converts old markers into energy as well as wax compounds for asphalt and roofing shingles. The process repurposes the entire marker, regardless of the different kinds of plastics or how they are assembled. ALL brands of markers, highlighters and dry erase markers can be recycled.  Markers can be placed in the WHITE bucket near the front doors or in the GREEN buckets throughout the building.

Absent/Late Arrival-
If you are going to be late or absent, please call the Thorson attendance line at 262-376-6766 before 9:00 a.m.  Please state your student's first and last name, teacher, and the reason for the absence.  If you are going to be late and are taking hot lunch, please let us know your child's lunch choice by calling the school office at 262-376-6705.

Weekly Newsletter January 24-28

Dear Families,

It was a great week in Kindergarten! The Thorson Winter Wonderland Olympics was a blast and the Kinderland Ice Bears were all GOLD MEDAL Winners!!

ELA

This week our main story was Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner. While listening to the story, students were working on visualizing, predicting, inferring, and stating their opinion.  We also practiced the 5 Finger retelling strategy to retell the story - be sure to ask your child to share this with you at home (hold up hand and point to each finger as they retell 1-characters 2-setting 3-beginning 4-middle and 5-ending).

Here are our 2 highlighted vocabulary words.  Can your child tell you what they mean or use them in a sentence???
Our phonics focus was the -sh digraph.  We learned that a digraph is 2 letters that work together to make one sound.  We practiced making, reading and writing words that begin and end with -sh.  We could practice this at home, too.  Try asking us to write fish, wish, dash, cash, shot, shed, sham or ship!
Begins with sh like shed  &  Ends with sh like wash

Sticking with the snowman theme - our new poem this week was My New Friend! The kids loved the actions for this poem - be sure to ask us to sing it for you at home!
Our 2 new sight words were said and that.  Be sure to ask your child where the hat, scarf and mittens were hiding in our game below.
Writing
This week we continued our How To writing.  We brainstormed ideas that we could write about on our own.  We come up with so many topics...how to build a snowman, how to do a cartwheel, how to get dressed, how to make breakfast, how to play soccer...be sure to ask your child what he/she is writing about!

Math
In math we focused on sorting 2D shapes in a variety of ways.  We sorted by shape, color, size, straight lines and curved lines, and corners and no corners.  After we sorted the shape cards, we then compared the numbers in each group using our vocabulary words of greater than, less than and equal to.

UPCOMING EVENTS:
*If your child would like to pass out Valentines, we have 32 students between our two rooms.  Your child does not need to address each envelope- just make sure that he/she signs their name on each valentine.  You can start sending in Valentines on Wednesday, February 9th.

*On Thursday, February 10th we will be celebrating 101 days in school! Your child is welcome to dress like a Dalmation for our special celebration.

*Calling ALL Doctors!! On Monday February 14th, we will have our Kinder Cardiology Day - Our little heart surgeons will have fun reviewing their skills in our hospital room transformation! Your child is welcome to dress like a doctor for our special day!
