Weekly Newsletter- September 13-20th

Dear Families,

Your kindergartner continues to be busy!  In Communication Arts, we are and learning the star words “see” and “am.” Please practice these words with your child as they will be reviewed and tested throughout the school year.  We have been working on the story The Recess Queen.  We learned how to make predictions, retell the story, infer, and answer questions about the story.  Here is a video about the story.

In writing, we have been working on drawing a picture and labeling what it is.  You may see some invented spelling for our labels.  This is perfectly okay!  Students are learning to hear the sounds in words and writing what they hear down.  There will be plenty of time for us to have the correct spelling at another time!

We have worked on some Nursery Rhymes this week.  We practiced the rhymes "Humpty Dumpty, Hickory Dickory Dock, Baa Baa Black Sheep, and Jack and Jill. We are sure that you are hearing some of them!  We created actions, found letters,  and found rhyming words.   Ask your kindergartner to say some to you

During math class we have been working on identifying objects to 5.  We have also been working on looking at our special math tool- the five-frame.

Reminders:
• Remember to have your child wear shoes that they can take on and off independently.
• Make sure your child has two daily healthy snacks!
• Please practice zipping jackets and tying shoes with your child.

Tomorrow is Brew Crew Friday!  Wear your favorite Brewers gear or the color blue!

If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us.
Love,
Mrs. Neuville and Mrs. Rocky

A Note from the Principal:
Dear Thorson Families,

Happy Thursday! What a great week we have had. We had an incredibly successful dining for dollars event on Tuesday night. A huge thank you goes to all of our PTO volunteers who helped out at this event, as well as to our brave teachers who took on the dunk tank. There was so much excitement and it was a super fun event! We also had our mum sale pick-up today. Seeing all the mums out there was quite the sight and this fundraiser was a great success. Thank you to all who volunteered and supported our first couple of PTO events.

Please note that we do have guidelines related to dress in our elementary student handbook. These guidelines can be found on pages 11-12. Please review these guidelines and ensure that your child is dressed appropriately for school. Thank you for your cooperation.

Field trips are back!  That being said, it is a state requirement that students wear a face mask on school buses. Additionally, some destinations require masks in certain circumstances.  If your child has an upcoming field trip, please make sure that they come to school with a mask so they are prepared on that day. Thank you!

Tomorrow, Friday, September 17 is an EARLY RELEASE DAY.  Students will be dismissed at 1:45pm.  The morning 4K session runs from 8:50-10:35 a.m. and the afternoon session runs from 12:00-1:45 p.m. Please plan accordingly.

Have a wonderful rest of the week. Thank you for all you do to make Thorson a great school community!

Sincerely,

Angela Little, Principal

Nurse's Corner
Cold and Flu season is upon us and we are still experiencing cases of COVID-19 within our schools and community.  In an effort to keep all of our staff and students' health a priority, and help limit the spread of illness within our schools, please keep the following recommendations in mind.

  • Please keep your child home from school when exhibiting any signs or symptoms of illness including, but not limited to: fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat, loss of taste and/or smell, etc.
  • Please contact your healthcare provider if your child experiences any signs or symptoms that could be indicative of COVID-19 and inquire about having him or her tested.
  • Please keep your child home if he or she is undergoing testing for COVID-19 if symptomatic and/or due to exposure if quarantining. Please notify your child's school if your child is diagnosed with COVID-19.
  • Please reinforce healthy habits at home: frequent hand washing, coughing and/or sneezing into one’s elbow, and refraining from attending events/activities when experiencing signs or symptoms of illness.
  • Please notify the school if your child has had contact with someone who you know was diagnosed with COVID-19. (Quarantines are currently not mandatory, but we continue to recommend quarantine in cases of exposure in hopes we can help limit the spread of COVID-19 in our schools).

Join 5th Grade Band

This is a reminder that 5th-grade band registration meetings take place at Webster Middle School next week. Both parents and students should attend. There are four different meetings times. Please select whichever meeting date/time works best for you:

Monday, Sept. 13 @ 4:00 PM (18 students attending)
Monday, Sept. 13 @ 7:00 PM (25 students attending)
Thursday, Sept. 16 @ 4:00 PM (17 students attending)
Thursday, Sept. 16 @ 7:00 PM (13 students attending)

I've listed how many students we have attending each session. If you have flexibility in which meeting you can attend, I would recommend trying to come to a smaller meeting. If you'd like to switch times, please email me so I can keep track of attendance.

At this meeting, we will review our elementary band program, scheduling, and instrument rental options. Also, students will be able to try out their top three instruments to help select the best instrument for them.

Please make sure you register before this meeting using this link
