A Note from the Principal

Dear Thorson Families,

We had a great turnout at our annual Thorson Night at the CHS bulldogs basketball game on Tuesday  night. Thank you to all who came out to join us. We have such a strong Thorson and Cedarburg community, and last night was a great showcase of this. Thank you to athletic director, Jon Hannam, for coordinating this awesome night for us!

Your child’s 2nd Quarter progress report has been posted in Skyward Family Access. Please make sure to take a few moments to review your child’s progress report. We are very proud of the growth of our students!

The conference scheduler is now open for our optional parent/teacher conferences that are next Thursday evening (2/8) from 4:00-7:30 p.m. If you would like to sign up for a conference, you can do so in Skyward Family Access. The conference scheduler will be closed on Monday, February 5. See here for directions to sign up.

With the winter weather, our morning drop-off line has grown and can sometimes take longer than expected. We are working on adjusting some things on our end to help with this. You can help by ensuring that your child is ready when you reach the drop-off point and that they quickly exit the vehicle so that we can keep the car line moving efficiently. Also, please remember to always exercise extreme caution when driving through the parking lot, as there are children, families, and staff moving about and we want to ensure the safety of all. Additionally, please ensure that you enter from the south end of the lot and exit from the north end. Both the entrance and exit are one way. No vehicles are allowed to enter through the exit at the north end of the lot at any time. Thank you for your cooperation!

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Angela Little, Principal

Weekly Newsletter January 22-26

 Dear Families,

It was a great FULL week in Kindergarten! Look how much fun we have had on the snow hills at recess!

Skills
This week in Skills, we were introduced to a new tricky word - little.  Only the second t and the e are underlined and tricky - because we have not learned these rules, yet.  We continued to drill the lowercase letter names and work on rhyming words.  Please work on both of these at home with us. We also continued to blend, segment, read and write words with consonant clusters in them!! Please help us at home by giving us words to blend and write like plugslimfasttent and snug - we can do it!!  Here is an example of the game we played this week to practice blending and reading words with consonant clusters and our tricky words.
Knowledge
We love learning about Kings and Queens! This week we listened to 3 new stories - The Princess and the Pea, Cinderella, and Snow White. We also added many new vocabulary words to our schema! Here is a peek at what our knowledge wall looks like!

Our new poem this week was My New Friend! The kids loved the actions for this poem - be sure to ask us to sing it for you at home!
Math
In math we focused on sorting 2D shapes in a variety of ways.  We sorted by shape, color, size, straight lines and curved lines, and corners and no corners.  After we sorted the shape cards, we compared the numbers in each group using our vocabulary words of greater than, less than and equal to.

UPCOMING EVENTS:
*If your child would like to pass out Valentines, we have 39 students between our two rooms.  Your child does not need to address each envelope- just make sure that he/she signs his/her name on each valentine.  You can start sending in Valentines on Thursday, February 8th.

*On Tuesday, February 13th we will be celebrating 101 days in school! Your child is welcome to dress like a Dalmation for our special celebration.

*Calling ALL Doctors!! On  Wednesday, February 14th, we will have our Kinder Cardiology Day - Our little heart surgeons will have fun reviewing their skills in our hospital room transformation! Your child is welcome to dress like a doctor for this special day!

Have a great weekend!
XOXO

Weekly Newsletter- January 16-18

Dear Families,

This week flew by!  We had a busy short work!

ELA

In skills this week, we are continuing to work on consonant clusters.  Examples of these words are "milk, stamp, flip" We practiced these words in our new story, Kit's Pants.  This story is a part of a series of other stories about Kit.  When we practice these stories, we are also listening for the characters, setting, and events that happen in the story.  We are asked to answer these questions in a complete sentence.  We can do it!

In knowledge, we started our new unit of Kings and Queens.  We loved learning about how kings and queens lived long ago.  We learned all about how in a royal family, the dad is the king, the mom is the queen, the sister is called a princess, and the brother is called a prince.  We had the opportunity to listen to the story "King Midas and the Golden Touch".  We also learned the two nursery rhymes of "Old King Cole" and "Sing a Song of Sixpence"

We also learned a lot about Arctic Animals. Have you had a chance to watch our poem Arctic Animals on Seesaw? One of the animals we focused on was the polar bear.  As a class, we labeled a polar bear and worked on a polar bear project.

Math

We had fun learning the value of coins this week!  We played a few different games using nickels and pennies.  We had to count the values of 1 nickel and 1-5 pennies...We could practice this at home, too!  We also started looking at shapes and how they are made up.

We had a fantastic time with our PBIS celebration on Thursday.  It was so fun to go outside and play in the snow. The hot chocolate and candy canes were a special treat!  Way to go Jaguars!

*If your child is planning on sending in valentines - we have 39 students between our classrooms!

* More snack is needed!  If you are able to send in a box of Ritz crackers or Graham crackers, that would be so helpful

* Be sure that your child has  ALL their snow gear labeled!

Have a great weekend!

A Note from the Principal

Dear Thorson Families,

Today, the students and staff had the opportunity to celebrate our most recent PBIS all-school reward. It was an outdoor winter field day. Activities included sledding, hockey, and relay races. To top it all off, the students were treated to hot cocoa, complete with marshmallows and candy canes when they came inside. Thank you to the PTO for providing this treat for our students. Thank you also to our PBIS school team for arranging this fun celebration for our students.

We have had some true Wisconsin winter weather as of late. If the air temperature and windchill are above zero, we go outside. Please be sure that your child has their winter gear every day, including a warm winter jacket, boots, hats, and mittens/gloves. Boots are important at this time of year to keep the students warm and dry! If students want to play in the snow, they need snowpants, boots, coats, hats, and gloves/mittens. Thank you for your help with this!

We are excited to announce that enrollment is NOW open for students that will be new to the Cedarburg School District in 2024-25. Follow the instructions on the district website to enroll. We look forward to welcoming you to the Cedarburg School District!

Next Tuesday, January 23,  is Thorson Night at CHS! This is a fun night to come out and support the CHS Varsity basketball team and show our Cedarburg and Thorson pride. The game begins at 7:00 p.m.. All Thorson students will get into the game for free. Each Thorson student will also receive a free popcorn.  Thorson students are invited to join us to cheer on the boys starting line up as they are announced. If your child would like to do this, please be at the boys game by 6:50 p.m. and meet us at the north end of the field house. We will also have a fun half-time lightning game that some students and staff will be participating in. Please note that entrance to sporting events is now cashless. Please see the information below regarding GoFan mobile ticketing. We hope to see many of you there.

There is no school tomorrow, Friday, January 19, as it is a combined professional development and records day for the teaching staff.  Have a great long weekend!

Sincerely,

Angela Little, Principal
