NO SCHOOL TOMORROW!  ENJOY YOUR SPRING BREAK!

A Note from the Principal
Dear Thorson Families,

We had a great day today at Thorson celebrating our most recent PBIS all-school reward. Since we are heading off to Spring Break, with many families and staff headed to a variety of locations, we took the students on a Thorson World Tour for this all-school reward. Each grade level picked a country and planned a fun activity for the students that relates to that country. Each class then had the opportunity to visit three different “countries”. The students had a blast. See our Thorson Facebook page for some photos of the celebration!

We are gearing up for our annual Stuff the Bus food drive. The food drive will run from April 17-21 and will benefit the Saukville Community Food Pantry.  Food will be collected at all three elementary schools in the district. More information will be provided after spring break.

Tomorrow, Friday, March 24th is a professional development day for teachers, so there will be NO SCHOOL for students.  Spring Break runs from March 27-March 31.  Enjoy the long break and if your plans take you away from Cedarburg, please travel safely!

Please remember that Forward testing for students in grades 3-5 will be April 11-21. Teachers will be going over the online tools training and sample items during the week of April 3.  Your child’s teacher will communicate the specific testing schedule for their class. Please ensure that your child is in attendance on these days.

Looking ahead, there is no school on Friday, April 7 in observance of Good Friday. There is also no school on Monday, April 10, as that is a professional development/records day for teachers.

Have a wonderful Spring Break! We look forward to seeing everyone back when school resumes on Monday, April 3.

Sincerely,

Angela Little, Principal
Scott May, Assistant Principal

Dear Families,
BRING on SPRING!! We are ALL ready to ditch our snow boots and coats for spring jackets!!

This week in ELA, we read Piggie Pie by Margie Palatini. While listening to the story, we worked on the strategies of predicting, visualizing, retelling, inferring, and making text to text connections!! It was hilarious - we all LOVED this story! Be sure to ask your child about his/her favorite part!
We all know what cackled and lumbered means...ask us to tell you!
Our 2 new sight words were be and there.  We had to read them and find them in our game all week.  Be sure to ask us where those sneaky piggies were hiding!
In phonics this week we worked on the /ang/ ending.  We can read and write words like hang, sang, rang, bang and clang! Ask us to show you at home!
This week our poem was Spring Celebration! We sang our poem, we read our poem, and we made up movements for our poem.  We know you will like watching us perform our poem on Seesaw on Friday!
In Writer's Workshop, we started a new writing unit! We are learning how to write an Opinion piece! This week we practiced telling our opinions to our partners in a game called Would You Rather! We are looking forward to learning all about this new writing genre!

In Math this week, our students had experiences with measurement. We spent time comparing the weights of objects stressing the concepts of heavier and lighter. We also estimated and counted capacity in non-standard units, with a focus on counting by 10's and 1's!

Thank you Mr. Hannem for coming to our Thorson Nature Center and teaching us how to find and tap a Maple tree! We can't wait to see how much sap we collect from our kindergarten tree! When we get back from Spring Break we will get to try our Thorson Maple Syrup - yay!

GREAT NEWS!!
The entire school earned a PBIS reward today!! We traveled Around the World (Thorson) and learned about 3 different countries from different teachers in our school! Be sure to ask us which countries we visited and what we learned!

Have a WONDERFUL Spring Break!!

Weekly Newsletter- March 13-17th

 Dear Parents,

This week we worked on the r blends spelling pattern.  This includes fr, dr, and pr words.  Words like frog, dress, and prep are included in this spelling pattern.  The students practiced building the words and reading the words.  We looked for the words in our stories and poems.  This week we also practiced the star words "saw" and "had".  We continue to practice these words daily.  Please be sure to practice these words with your child!

The story this week was Jamie O'Rourke and The Big Potato.  It is a very silly story about a very lazy man who caught a leprechaun!  While listening to the story, students worked on identifying the problem and solution, retelling, inferring, making connections, and stating their opinion.  Ask your kindergartner what their favorite part of the story was.

Here is a link to the video for you to enjoy!

We work on a poem each week.  This week's poem is called "Luck of the Irish"  We created movements, looked for rhyming words, and sorted out word families.  I am sure you have heard this poem often at home!

In math, we are using pan scales.  We can weigh two items and see which one is heavier and which one is lighter.  We have been having fun testing them out!

Reminders:

Tomorrow is Jaguar Jump Start!  We will be meeting in the gym.  Please have your child to school on time!

Wear GREEN tomorrow!

Thank you for all of your support!

Newsletter February 27-March 3

Dear Families,

This week we talked about blends.   We learned about the pl, sl, and cl blends.  We made words and sorted out pictures.  We worked on the star words "if" and "out."  We reviewed these words in this week's stories, poems, and writing.  We continue to review all words and assess through the year! Please continue to work on these words with your child.

The story this week was Monster Trouble. While reading the story, we practiced the skills of predicting, retelling, making connections, and answering questions.  We learned about the important skill of perseverance.  That is the character trait of not giving up and trying even when things get hard.  Ask your kindergartner how Winifred AND the monsters showed perseverance in the story.

Please enjoy the story.

Check out the cute monsters we made to go with our story!

We work on a poem each week.  This week's poem is called "Your Body"  We created movements, looked for rhyming words, and sorted out word families.  We are sure you all have heard this poem often at home!

In math, we are continuing our work with identifying shapes.  We have learned about many of the 3D shapes.  The students loved learning to draw some of the 3D shapes.  Ask your kindergartner to draw them for you!  We are also continuing our work at identifying if a number is greater than or less than another number.  We played a fun game where a student would ask for a number, and we would cross out numbers that were greater or less than that number.  The game would continue until the correct number was found.

Here is a peek at our game board!

Reminders:

Tomorrow is an early release day!  Thank you, families, for making plans for your kiddos!  Teachers will be in meetings.

Ensure your kindergartner has two snacks a day- one in the morning and one in the afternoon.  No hangry students!  :)

A Note from the Principal
Dear Thorson Families,

We had a great week celebrating reading! The students enjoyed the fun dress up days and some extra special books that they read in their classrooms and in the library. We will close out the week by getting “cozy” with a good book. We invite students to wear their PJs to school tomorrow.

Our Thorson PTO Winter Carnival is just over a week away. See the information below to pre-purchase Carnival wristbands and to volunteer to help. The Carnival Chairs and Committee have been hard at work and are excited to provide a fun, family event for our school community. Please consider helping to make this event a success by volunteering to help. There are still many slots open and in need of your help. Financial assistance may be available for those families who are unable to attend due to financial constraints. Please reach out to the school office if you would like to request this.

After spring break, students in 3rd-5th grade will be taking the Wisconsin Forward assessment. We will be reviewing the online testing tools and sample items to prepare the students for the assessment April 3-April 6. Testing will occur April 11-14 and April 17-21. 4th grade will also be taking their science and social studies portion of the assessment on 3/21 and 3/22, which is right before spring break. Although there are opportunities for make-ups, it is important that students are in attendance on all of these dates. Please mark these dates on your calendar and watch for a letter with more information about this assessment to come out soon.

Tomorrow, Friday March 3, is an early release day, with K-5 students being dismissed at 1:45 p.m. 4K will run their modified early release day schedule.  Teachers will be engaged in professional development activities in the afternoon. If your child will have a change in their going home plans, please let the office know as soon as possible and no later than noon tomorrow.

Have a great weekend!
