Our Weekly News Jan. 23-27

 Dear Families,

It was a great week in Kindergarten! We started off our week with a SNOW DAY! Here are a few pictures of our winter themed centers.

At the HOT COCOA center, we took a colored mug and spilled the marshmallows that were inside.  We then had to use the letters on the marshmallows to spell a sight word.  We also had to record our work.

At the SNOWBALL center, we needed to find a snowball that had the correct beginning sound for our CVC words.

At the GONE FISHING center, we caught a fish, recorded and solved an addition equation!

At the TUNDRA LANES center, we worked together to set up 10 trees.  We then took turns bowling and recording how many trees we knocked down. What a fun way to explore subtraction!

We had SNOW much fun!!
ELA

This week our main story was Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner. While listening to the story, students were working on visualizing, inferring, and stating their opinion.  We also worked on retelling the story by remembering key details in the text.  Be sure to ask your child to retell the story to you at home!

Here are our 2 highlighted vocabulary words.  Can your child tell you what they mean or use them in a sentence???
Our phonics focus was the -sh and -ch digraphs.  We learned that a digraph is 2 letters that work together to make one sound.  We practiced making, reading and writing words that begin and end with -sh and -ch.  We could practice this at home, too.  Try asking us to write fish, cash, shed, ship, chop, chat, rich and such!
Begins with sh like shed  &  Ends with sh like wash

Begins with ch like chips  &  Ends with ch like inch

Sticking with the snowman theme - our new poem this week was My New Friend! The kids loved the actions for this poem - be sure to ask us to sing it for you at home!
Our 2 new sight words were said and that.  Be sure to ask your child where the hat, scarf and mittens were hiding in our game below.
Writing
This week we finished up our How To writing.  We had fun writing our own "How To" stories.  We came up with so many different topics to write about...how to build a snowman, how to ride a horse, how to get dressed, how to make breakfast, how to make cookies, how to build a robot...be sure to ask your child what topic he/she wrote about! We are excited to start our Informational Non-Fiction writing next week!

Math
In math we focused on sorting 2D shapes in a variety of ways.  We sorted by shape, color, size, straight lines and curved lines, and corners and no corners.  After we sorted the shape cards, we then compared the numbers in each group using our vocabulary words of greater than, less than and equal to.

UPCOMING EVENTS:
*If your child would like to pass out Valentines, we have 38 students between our two rooms.  Your child does not need to address each envelope- just make sure that he/she signs their name on each valentine.  You can start sending in Valentines on Wednesday, February 8th.

*On Monday, February 13th we will be celebrating 101 days in school! Your child is welcome to dress like a Dalmation for our special celebration.

*Calling ALL Doctors!! On Monday February 14th, we will have our Kinder Cardiology Day - Our little heart surgeons will have fun reviewing their skills in our hospital room transformation! Your child is welcome to dress like a doctor for our special day!

Have a great weekend!
XOXO

A Note from the Principal
Dear Thorson Families,

As was indicated in my email to you  on Monday, we conducted a school safety/intruder drill today at school. Students were instructed on how to respond in the event that an intruder would enter our building.  With this drill, we practiced our emergency management ALICE procedures. Please see this FAQ sheet for more information regarding ALICE. During the drill today, our students and staff did an excellent job and followed the outlined procedures.  We are very proud of how they handled themselves and appreciate their efforts.  If you have any questions about the drill, please feel free to contact me.

Next Friday, February 3,  is Thorson Night at CHS! This is a fun night to come out and support the CHS Varsity basketball teams and show our Cedarburg and Thorson pride. This night is a double header. The girls Varsity team plays at 5:30 and the boys Varsity team plays at 7:00. Families are invited to both games. All Thorson students will get into the game for free. Each Thorson student will also receive a free popcorn.  Thorson students are invited to join us to cheer on the boys starting line up as they are announced. If your child would like to do this, please be at the boys game by 6:50 p.m. and meet us at the north end of the field house. We will also have a fun half-time lightning game that some students and staff will be participating in. Please note that entrance to sporting events is now cashless. Please see the information below regarding GoFan mobile ticketing. We hope to see many of you there.

Please remember that there is a lot of activity in and around our parking lot at many times of the day, and even before and after school. We have before school clubs and band lessons, as well as drop off for Y Care. Please drive slowly and cautiously at all times and watch for pedestrians. There are students and parents walking from cars before school in the morning to get to various activities. The safety of all is our top priority. Thank you for your cooperation and help with this!

Recently we have had a lot of requests to provide student information for birthday party invitations or to pass out invitations at school. The school office is unable to provide student information to other families. If families are in the PTO Buzz Book, you can join the PTO and obtain family information this way. Birthday invitations can only be handed out at school if the entire class or all girls/boys are given an invitation. Thank you for your cooperation!

Watch for an email tomorrow regarding accessing your child’s 2nd Quarter progress report and scheduling an optional conference for your child in Skyward.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Angela Little, Principal

Weekly Newsletter- January 17-19

 Dear Families,

This week flew by!  We had a busy short work!  We learned about the -ig and -in word families.  You may have noticed this with our Seesaw work.  We worked on the star words "him" and "his"  Be sure to practice these words with your kindergartner.

This week in reading, we learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  We read stories and watched a Brain Pop Jr. about his life.  You can visit Brain Pop Jr. and watch it!  The students worked together to fill out a sheet about what we had learned.  Ask your kindergartner all about his life.

We also learned a lot about Arctic Animals. Have you had a chance to watch our poem Arctic Animals on Seesaw? One of the animals we focused on was the polar bear.  As a class, we labeled a polar bear and worked on a polar bear project.

labeling parts of a polar bear

polar bear project

In writing, we are continuing to work on our How-To writing.  We learned how we start each step with first, next, then, and last.  We also learned that it is important to talk directly to the reader when we write.  We can do this by using the word "you."

In math we started looking at shapes and how they are made up.  We looked at a variety of pattern blocks.  We also started to graph our shapes to be able to compare and use our vocabulary words of greater than and less than.

We had a fantastic time with our buddies for the PBIS celebration on Thursday.  It was so fun to go outside and search for the clues.  The hot chocolate and movie was a special treat!  Way to go Jaguars!

Thank you so much!

NO SCHOOL TOMORROW

A Note from the Principal
Dear Families,

This is the last student day of the semester! There is no school tomorrow, Friday, January 20, while the teachers participate in professional learning and work on progress reports. We will be uploading the 2nd quarter progress reports to Skyward Family Access late next week. You will receive an email when that information is ready to be viewed.

We had a great day at Thorson today celebrating meeting our school wide goal of  filling up our Jaguar Pride ticket bucket! We had an outdoor treasure hunt with our buddy classes. Students had to travel to various outdoor locations on our school campus and find a keyword. The final clue took them to the cafeteria, where they enjoyed a hot chocolate treat. Thank you to our PBIS Tier 1 Team for planning this fun reward, and to our fabulous PTO for providing the hot cocoa. Our students are amazing and have done a great job being Respectful, Responsible, and Safe!

As I mentioned last week, 4K/5K registration for the 2023-24 school year is now open. Please note that there have been some changes to the guidelines for 4K/5K enrollment. Please see this FAQ for the details! Feel free to contact me or the office with any questions.

NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY

A Note from the Principal
Dear Thorson Families,

The end of the second quarter of the school year is next week (Jan. 19), and our spring parent teacher conference night will be following shortly after that. If you are satisfied with the communication you have received from your child's teacher, and you understand your child’s academic strengths and areas for growth, you are not required to schedule a spring conference. However, we will continue to offer traditional conferences, so if you feel a conference would be beneficial, save February 9th on your calendar so you can be sure to sign up for a conference. More information will be coming out about these conferences at the end of January. Our teachers appreciate knowing your concerns and working with you to resolve any issues as they arise, so always email or call your child’s teacher whenever there is a need.

Students in grades K-5th are currently taking the iReady diagnostic assessment for our second testing period. Testing started this week and will continue through the end of the testing window, which is January 27. Results of your child’s assessment will be posted in Skyward Family Access in February. You will receive an email when the results are ready to be viewed.

Please note that enrollment is NOW open for 4K and 5K students that will be new to the Cedarburg School District in 2023-24. Follow the instructions on the district website to enroll. Feel free to contact the main office with any questions.

Please note that next week is a short week. There is no school on Monday, January 16 as it is the observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. There is also no school next Friday, January 20, as this is a professional development day to close out the second quarter.

Packer Day Tomorrow- Wear your Packer Gear

A Note from the Principal
Dear Thorson Families,

Happy New Year and welcome back! We have had a great start to 2023. This week we rolled out our PBIS refresher with the students and have been reviewing our school wide expectations. We have also reviewed our winter behavior expectations for snow and have been working on how to solve problems on the playground by using various strategies and thinking through the issue.

Tomorrow we will have our first all-school Jaguar Jumpstart of the new year. We will begin promptly at 8:50 a.m. in the gym. The character traits for January are tolerance and acceptance. We will be learning about these traits all month and focusing on how to appreciate differences, respect and learn from one another, and find common ground.

Our next PTO meeting is this coming Monday, January 9, at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Room. All are welcome to attend. We hope to see many of you there!

Looking ahead, please mark your calendars for Thorson Night at the CHS Bulldogs basketball game on Friday, February 3. We are excited to be able to bring this event back this year. All Thorson staff, students, and families are invited to attend the high school varsity basketball games. This night is a double header with the girls playing first at 5:30 and then the boys at 7:00.
