Thorson Thursday Folder

A Note from the Principal
Dear Thorson Families,

The staff and I are looking forward to a fun last week to celebrate all of our successes this year with your children.  I would like to take this opportunity to THANK YOU for your support throughout this school year. We had a wonderful year. I would also like to thank our Thorson PTO for all of the support they provide the teachers, our students, and the school as a whole. We are so lucky to have such a generous and supportive community.

We wish the 5th graders farewell and know that they are well prepared for their journey in middle school.  We look forward to hearing about the great things that they do in the years to come. We also bid farewell to any families who are seeing their last child move on from Thorson this year and any families who are moving and leaving Thorson.  Thank you for all you have done to support what we do at Thorson in your time here.  We wish you all the best.

The spring MAP (Measure of Academic Performance) Reading and Math assessment reports have been uploaded to Skyward Family Access for students in grades 5K-5.  Please take a moment to view your child’s MAP report by clicking on ‘Portfolio and Reports’ from the left sidebar. Then click on Click on “NWEA MAP Winter 2022”.  If you have any questions regarding the MAP report, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.

Next week we have two fun events going on to close out our school year.  On Monday, June 6,  we will have our annual Field Day event. Grade levels will rotate through fun games and activity stations throughout the day. Please make sure your child has a water bottle and is dressed appropriately for the weather that day.

On the last day of school, Thursday, June 9, we will be having an all-school field trip to Cedar Creek Park. This is our final PBIS all-school celebration. Students in K-2 will be at the park from 9:30-11:45 and will be bussed to and from the park. Students in grades 3-5 will be walking to and from the park and will be there from 11:45-1:45. All students will be eating lunch at the park. Hot lunch is available and will be a bag lunch option. Students will participate in a variety of fun activities at the park, including choosing their own ice cream treat from the What’s the Scoop ice cream truck, compliments of our Thorson PTO. Thank you, PTO, for sponsoring this portion of the trip!

Here’s to a great final week of the 2021-22 school year. Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Angela Little, Principal
Brittany Kleeba, Assistant Principal

Green Team
Green Squad is looking to fill a few more slots for helping with our new planter boxes!  Please sign-up!

Help the Thorson Green Team by turning your Coca-Cola product purchases into donations to Thorson.  You can donate by going to coke.com/give/schools and selecting Thorson Elementary.  Then scan or enter product codes from participating products.  Codes are located on the inside of caps or printed inside cardboard cases.  If you don't have the time, please bring the codes to school and put them in the RED bucket inside the front doors.  Donations received will be used to fund Green Team projects at Thorson.

Thorson is renewing its interest in the Crayola ColorCycle program.  This program converts old markers into energy as well as wax compounds for asphalt and roofing shingles. The process repurposes the entire marker, regardless of the different kinds of plastics or how they are assembled. ALL brands of markers, highlighters and dry erase markers can be recycled.  Markers can be placed in the WHITE bucket near the front doors or in the GREEN buckets throughout the building.

Absent/Late Arrival-

If you are going to be late or absent, please call the Thorson attendance line at 262-376-6766 before 9:00 a.m.  Please state your student's first and last name, teacher, and the reason for the absence.  If you are going to be late and are taking hot lunch, please let us know your child's lunch choice by calling the school office at 262-376-6705.

Weekly Newsletter- May 31-June 3

Dear Families,

Can you believe it is June?!?  We're in the final countdown!  One more week of kindergarten left!  Even though there is just a little bit of time, we have been busy!

This week we celebrated all of our summer birthdays by creating a birthday book, wearing a crown, and singing our favorite birthday song.  Have the most wonderful birthdays this summer friends!

We reviewed our sight words by playing "Where is Your Teacher Hiding?"  Students had to read sight words and pull down a word.  Their goal was to find Mrs. Neuville, Mrs. Rocky, and Mrs. Klebba before all the words were read.  The students did a fantastic job at being able to read the words.  Continue to practice these words over the summer to keep your child's skills strong.

In reading, we have been taking the time to read some Kevin Henkes stories.  We already read two of his stories at the start of the year, Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse and Chrysanthemum.  This week, we read Julius Baby of the World and Lilly's Big Day.  Both of these books included the character Lilly from Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse.  The students loved seeing her again in these other stories.  Here are video links to enjoy the story at home!

In writing, we worked on creating posters for the high school graduates who will be visiting our school on Friday.  We are so excited to celebrate the big kids on their next adventure!

We also created posters for a special assembly for our 5th graders who will be headed off to middle school.  We are proud of all of them and wish them all the best of luck at Webster!

During writing, we also visited one of our favorite websites, Pebble Go.  We learned all about great white sharks and wrote two facts about them.  We practiced including capital letters, spaces, and punctuation in our writing.  We are getting ready to go to first grade!  We then did a directed drawing on great white sharks to go along with our writing.

Great white sharks eat dolphins.  Great white sharks have babies and are called pups.

During math class, we have been learning about money.  We have discussed the penny, nickel, dime, and quarter.  We have learned about who is on the head's side and what is on the tail's side.  We have learned how much each coin is worth and how to count the coins.  We love hearing money songs to help us with identification.  Please enjoy this money video at home!

Tomorrow as a part of our Thorson count down to summer, it is eating lunch outdoors!  It is preferred that your child BRINGS their lunch from home.

Thank you all so much for your support!

Take care,
Mrs. Neuville and Mrs. Rocky
