Weekly Newsletter May 23-May 27

 Dear Families,
We started out our week with a SPRING celebration!  We had spring centers, we planted seeds in the kindergarten flower box and we even had a spring-time snack! Here are a few pics of our morning fun!

At this center, we had to be sight word detectives!  We had to crack the code to figure out the sight word! Can you figure out our secret code??

At our next center, we had to determine which digraph was in each picture word...

One of the centers we visited was a short vowel sort.  We had to place each picture under the correct short vowel butterfly.

Our favorite center was the SPRING creation station!

Going outside and planting in the kindergarten garden bed was also high on our FAVORITE list!  Be sure to drive by the school this summer and look for our class Zinnias!! We can't wait to see them sprout!

What a great day!
This week our read aloud was Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs: As Retold by Mo Willems. We all loved how Mo Willems twists the traditional fairy tale in a very silly way! While listening to the story, we worked on the strategies of predicting, retelling, making connections, inferring, and stating our opinions.  Be sure to ask your child to tell you about his/her favorite part!
Be sure to ask your child about our 2 story vocabulary words - succulent and unsuspecting!
We are all getting excited for SUMMER VACATION! This was our final poem for the year!! We are bringing our red poetry notebook home to share with you. It will be soo fun to go back and look through all of the fun poems we did throughout the year!

In phonics, we learned about Tricky y the Robber Guy - he steals the sounds of /e/ and /i/!  This week our words all focused on /y/ making the long i sound - like in the words cry, my, by and fly.  Be sure to ask us to write a few of these words at home for you!
We practiced our sight words by searching for the three hidden dinosaurs! Our kids are experts at reading and spelling these words!! Be sure to ask him/her where the dinos were hiding!
In writer's workshop, we learned all five parts of a friendly letter. We practiced our letter writing skills by writing to our First Grade Teachers, an incoming kindergartner and a thank you note to one of our morning helpers!  We are so proud of our writers - they are first grade ready!!
In math this week, we learned to tell time to the hour.   We had fun listening to the story - The Grouchy Ladybug -and setting our own little clocks to match the times in the book!
*We will be collecting take home books and bags next week.  We are so proud of our little readers! Thank you for all of the practice at home!!

*ALL library books should also be returned to school next week.

*Be sure to check back on our BLOG for photos of our Riveredge Field Trip!

Have a wonderful long weekend!

Hawaiian Day Tomorrow!
NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY

A Note from the Principal
Dear Thorson Families,

This has been a difficult week for all given the devastating events that took place on Tuesday in Uvalde, Texas.  As a school community, we are shocked and deeply saddened by what happened, and our hearts go out to the families who have lost a loved one due to this senseless act of violence. Please join us in keeping the students, staff, and families of the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District in our thoughts at this time.

School should and must be a place where students feel completely safe and secure. As Superintendent Bugnacki shared in his email yesterday, we will have an increased police presence in and around our buildings as an added precaution, and we will continue to be vigilant about safety practices and procedures. We will also continue to emphasize the importance of belonging and taking care of those in our school family. We know that children will process this news in different ways. In addition to the resource provided yesterday,  here is another resource that can help you navigate these difficult topics with your children.

Last night, the board approved the contract for Mrs. Brittany Kleeba to become the next principal of Parkview Elementary. Mrs. Kleeba has served as the assistant principal for both Parkview and Thorson Elementary Schools this year and is a tremendous asset to our schools and district. Although Mrs. Kleeba will be greatly missed by the Thorson community, we are excited for her to take on this new challenge and wish her the very best. Mrs. Kleeba will transition to her new role as principal of Parkview on July 1. We are currently in the process of hiring a new assistant principal for Thorson and Parkview.

As we quickly move toward the end of the school year, our PBIS Committee is rolling out a fun “Countdown to Summer”. The countdown will start on June 1st and will have a different theme/activity each day based on one of the letters in the word “THORSON”.  See the attached document below for more details. We will be having our last special all-school PBIS celebration  on June 9, the last day of school. More information will be coming soon on this. We are excited to celebrate our last days of school together as a school community.

Did you know that Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day? Memorial day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in military service for the United States. Our deepest gratitude goes to all American families who have lost ancestors and family members for our freedoms.

Have a great holiday weekend!

Sincerely,

Angela Little, Principal
Brittany Kleeba, Assistant Principal

Green Team
Green Squad is looking to fill a few more slots for helping with our new planter boxes!  Please sign-up!

Help the Thorson Green Team by turning your Coca-Cola product purchases into donations to Thorson.  You can donate by going to coke.com/give/schools and selecting Thorson Elementary.  Then scan or enter product codes from participating products.  Codes are located on the inside of caps or printed inside cardboard cases.  If you don't have the time, please bring the codes to school and put them in the RED bucket inside the front doors.  Donations received will be used to fund Green Team projects at Thorson.

Thorson is renewing its interest in the Crayola ColorCycle program.  This program converts old markers into energy as well as wax compounds for asphalt and roofing shingles. The process repurposes the entire marker, regardless of the different kinds of plastics or how they are assembled. ALL brands of markers, highlighters and dry erase markers can be recycled.  Markers can be placed in the WHITE bucket near the front doors or in the GREEN buckets throughout the building.

Absent/Late Arrival-

If you are going to be late or absent, please call the Thorson attendance line at 262-376-6766 before 9:00 a.m.  Please state your student's first and last name, teacher, and the reason for the absence.  If you are going to be late and are taking hot lunch, please let us know your child's lunch choice by calling the school office at 262-376-6705.

Weekly Newsletter- May 16-20th

Dear Parents,

This week we reviewed the silent e-spelling pattern.   Words like make, tube, home, and time are part of this spelling pattern. All of our star words have been introduced!  Hooray!   We reviewed these words in the stories, poems, and writing we did this week.  We continue to review all words and assess through the year! Please continue to work on these words with your child.

This week's stories were Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus and The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog.  While reading these stories, the students worked on the skill of summarizing using the format of "Somebody, wanted, but, so/then" as a guide.  Students also worked on the skill of identifying the problem and solution and comparing the two stories.  We love Mo Willem's and his stories of the Pigeon.  Ask your kindergartner what they liked best about the two stories.  Here are links to the stories for you to enjoy.

The poem this week was Picnic Guests.  Students learned the words and the motions at the start of the week and practiced all week long.  Be sure to check the students out on Seesaw on Friday.

We finished up our opinion writing unit on Wednesday.  Students shared their stories with friends.  At the end of sharing our stories, we had a little celebration.  Each student got to have a donut for a job well done!  All of your child's opinion writing books came home.  Be sure to take a look at them and compliment your child on all his/her hard work.

Reminders:
Tomorrow is Neon Day at Thorson!  Wear your brightest outfit!
We will be visiting Riveredge on Thursday, May 26th

Weekly Newsletter May 9-13

Dear Families,
We have ALL enjoyed the sunshine and warm weather this week!! I'm not sure who is happier about not having to wear coats, hats, gloves or boots - teachers or students๐Ÿ˜‰

The story this week was How I became a Pirate.  This book is  a fun adventure in which Jeremy Jacobs realizes being a pirate is cool, but maybe not all it’s cracked up to be! While listening to the story, students were working on predicting, retelling,  making inferences and telling their opinion.   Ask your kindergartner what their favorite part of the story was.
Our vocabulary words this week were repair and slather.  Ask us to use these two words in a sentence for you!
We made predictions...
and we made inferences, too!

We loved playing our hidden treasure smartboard game while practicing our sight words. We are ALL doing a really great job reading these words.  During our Guided Reading time, we are practicing writing these words, too!
This week our phonics focus was on the long u vowel sound using the u_e pattern.   Words like tune, tube, cube, and cute are a few of the long u words that we were working on.  The students practiced building, reading, and writing these words. Ask us to write a few long u words for you at home, too.
Everyone loved our poem about going on a Field Trip to the City Zoo! Be sure to have your child sing and do the motions for our poem at home!
We are wrapping up our Opinion Writing Unit with a piece about the best pet! You will love reading about the pet your child would like to get!!

Have a great weekend!
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, be sure to reach out to us!
