Tomorrow Thorson Wears Pink

A Note from the Principal
Dear Thorson Families,

We are officially closing up the first month of school. It has flown by and has been a great month. The students are doing a great job being respectful, responsible, and safe. They have learned so much and are excited to continue their learning in the coming months.

Next week, your child’s teacher will be sending you a slideshow that details the curriculum that is covered in your child’s grade level, as well as other important information regarding the school day. Please watch for this email and be sure to review the attached presentation.

As we turn our calendars to October, we are busy planning for Fall celebrations and Veteran’s Day. We will be having our annual Pumpkin Days event, as well as a new and improved OUTDOOR Halloween parade. Get your child’s costume ready and mark your calendar for October 29 at 3:00 p.m. We are also working on an outdoor celebration for Veteran’s Day on Thursday, November 11. More details will be coming about all of these events soon.

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Angela Little, Principal

Cold and Flu season is upon us and we are still experiencing cases of COVID-19 within our schools and community.  In an effort to keep all of our staff and students' health a priority, and help limit the spread of illness within our schools, please keep the following recommendations in mind.

  • Please keep your child home from school when exhibiting any signs or symptoms of illness including, but not limited to: fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat, loss of taste and/or smell, etc.
  • Please contact your healthcare provider if your child experiences any signs or symptoms that could be indicative of COVID-19 and inquire about having him or her tested.
  • Please keep your child home if he or she is undergoing testing for COVID-19 if symptomatic and/or due to exposure if quarantining. Please notify your child's school if your child is diagnosed with COVID-19.
  • Please reinforce healthy habits at home: frequent hand washing, coughing and/or sneezing into one’s elbow, and refraining from attending events/activities when experiencing signs or symptoms of illness.
  • Please notify the school if your child has had contact with someone who you know was diagnosed with COVID-19. (Quarantines are currently not mandatory, but we continue to recommend quarantine in cases of exposure in hopes we can help limit the spread of COVID-19 in our schools).

Weekly Newsletter - September 27-October 1

September 30, 2021,
Dear Families,
Happy Birthday Johnny Appleseed! What a fun way to start off our week! Here is a little Animoto video of our day (remember, if you are accessing this from a mobile device you will need to click on the blue heading - Weekly Newsletter - September 27-October 1)

ELA
This week our read aloud was The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi. We worked on the reading strategies of predicting, naming the characters and setting, finding details in the illustrations and finding similarities and differences in the characters.  Be sure to ask your child why our names are important!
Our new sight words were /the/ and /we/.  We played a game each day to try and find Johnny Appleseed's apples.  Ask your child to read the words below and tell you where the apples were hiding!
In phonics, we worked on the letters /c/ /f/ /d/ and /g/.  We practiced writing the letters, learning the sounds and hand motions that go along with each letter, and finding words that begin with each letter, too.  Please review these letter sounds with your child at home!

We love our Apples poem from this week! We would love to sing it for you at home!
In writers workshop, we are working on writing pattern books.  We are trying to stretch out our words to hear each sound.  This can be really tricky!  A little practice from home would be super helpful. Writing apple - apl is exactly how it sounds! We are also learning to use spaces between our words and end our sentences with punctuation, too.

Math
This week we started our Math Centers.  We love working in small groups to practice our special math games.  Be sure to ask your child which math centers he/she visited this week!

*Tomorrow is a  PINK OUT at Thorson - be sure to wear pink
*Please remember to send 2 snacks daily - NO HANGRY KIDS in kindergarten:)
*With colder mornings- please label all jackets, sweatshirts, etc

Have a great weekend!

Weekly Newsletter - September 20-24

September 23, 2021

Dear Families,
It's been a ROCKIN' good time in Kindergarten!! We started off our week with fun, engaging, academic Pete the Cat centers!  As you can see in the pictures below - a great time was had by all!  We hope your children told you ALL about our day!
Our teachers dressed like Pete the cat! They are ready to have some fun!
Put on your VIP badge and let's go!!

At the Rockin' Syllables center we played our guitars and counted out the syllables in some special words.

Next, we visited the Colorful Shoes center.  We worked on coloring, tracing and spelling our color words!

Then came the Ducky Shapes center.  Each duck had a special shape attached to the bottom.  We worked hard on identifying our 2D shapes!

Our last center was the Magic Sunglasses center.  We had to wear our magic sunglasses to find a hidden number on our cards.  We then had to find the matching 10 frame and write the number.

Working hard in KINDERGARTEN can be so much fun!!
We even ate a little mud!!
We loved making our own Pete the Cats to decorate our hallways!
We had the BEST day!!

We continued reading Pete the Cat books all week!  We also worked on the story Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes.  We worked on many skills including predicting, sequencing, retelling, inferring, character traits, and opinion.  Be sure to ask your child his/her favorite part!

Here is what our sight word game looked like this week.  Our 2 new words were : and and like. Please practice these words with your child every night!

Math
In math this week we worked on decomposing the number 5 into pairs.  Ask us to show you how we decompose this five frame.

Your child should hold up 2 fingers on one hand (dots) and 3 fingers on the other (empty boxes).

**Wear Orange and Black tomorrow to show our cedarburg spirit!!

Have a wonderful weekend!
